The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus Don't You Fake It Album

Formed in 2003, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus are a quintet from Middleburg, Florida, with an average age of 21. Releasing what is their debut album, an indication of their style can be found from their place on America's Warped Tour, alongside the likes of AFI, NOFX, and Less Than Jake.

To a high-octane tempo, "In Fate's Hands" opens the record in punk-rock fashion, complete with ferocious chanting that should see it become favourable with college students. Bits of screaming are reminiscent of Jamie Oliver's vocal touches to Lost Prophets' songs, and it is here that The RJA hit a stumbling block. As varied as they are, they regularly sound like other bands, struggling to find their own identity. "Waiting" is similar to Jimmy Eat World, emo-ballad "Cat And Mouse" sees Ronnie Winters sounding like Hoobastank's Doug Robb, and the intro to "Atrophy" brings to mind the now defunct At The Drive-In. This isn't to say that these tracks are bad, in fact at no point is there need to reach for the skip button, it's just that the lack of originality and consistency is unflattering.

There are, however, two standout moments to "Don't You Fake It" – both of which see the songs take a 'narrative' tone. "Seventeen Ain't So Sweet" is the tail of a girl with talent but without the looks to match, advised not to give up on her dreams. It's underlined by the umpteenth catchy melody, and has a positive manner that shines through. Even more impressive is the urgent "Face Down", which tackles the issue of domestic abuse. Beginning with a girl who hides her anguish behind makeup, it goes on to mock men who hit women in order to prove their own masculinity, all to relentless riffing and poppy melodies. It is on this track that the band really announces themselves, and more like this would see them raise the bar on many of their peers.
