The Postmarks Memoirs At The End Of The World Album

The Postmarks is one of those band names that you would imagine has been used before, utterly 60s, understated yet classy. Well the same can be said about their third album Memoirs At The End Of The World.

Despite being littered with chirping horns and smooth strings, it's a mellow record for the main part, a lounge tinged cinematic journey that you wouldn't be surprised to find out was a soundtrack to a 60s spy film. The likes of No One Said This Would Be Easy with its lyrics of 'saving the world, and its dramatic, atmospheric string section transport you to a scene from a Bond film. The 007 theme continues with Jetsetter, 'got to make it to the next world, if you're gonna get diamond and pearls' this time over a more mellow array of sweeping strings.

Singer Tim Yehezkely's (yes she's a woman) soft as snow voice is tailor made for an album of this style and tone, it cruises along whilst often complemented effortlessly by the classic instruments arranged throughout. I'm In Deep allows her to use her voice to glorious effect, its sleepy first gear tone seems to provide the perfect setting.

Its with The Girl from Algenib that the Postmarks come closest to perfecting the film score track. A mix of pulsating beats and gently strummed guitars create a mysterious atmospheric sound before a beautiful string arrangement arrives to bring proceedings to a close. If this really were a film, it would be the perfect moment for the end credits to fall.

What is most evident from listening to Memoirs At the end of the world, is its refusal to back down from its intensity. Every track seems to serve a huge purpose in terms of the albums film score theme. The Postmarks have ultimately made an album that, despite perhaps lacking on the originality front, oozes class and sophistication throughout.
