The film, which was based on a series of graphic novels about a group of Victorian literary characters-turned-superheroes - including Allan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, Mina Harker, Tom Sawyer and Dorian Gray - was originally adapted in 2003.

A planned sequel was scrapped when the film only grossed $179 million (GBP112 million) worldwide.

In 2013, movie bosses attempted to create a TV series based on the film, but the pilot episode was never picked up.

The 2003 film also featured Shane West, Stuart Townsend and Jason Flemyng, who doubled up as Dr. Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde.
