If there’s anyone we should listen to about films, it’s probably Steven Spielberg. The multi-award winning director has been at the helm of more movie classics that most of us have had hot dinners - from bringing about the first modern blockbuster with Jaws, to sitting as executive producer on the latest in the highly successful dinosaur franchise, Jurassic World.

So when the King of the Blockbuster tells you that the current style of superhero movies won’t last, who are we to argue?

Speaking to the Associated Press, the man who took ET back home believes that the superhero style will go "the way of the Western".

Despite his predictions, Marvel and Warner Bros. have jam-packed hero schedules right up until 2020 but Spielberg - who was promoting his newest film, Bridge of Spies - believes that the genre definitely has an expiry date.

He said: "We were around when the Western died and there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western."

The 68-year-old director, who brought the world Indiana Jones, added: "Right now the superhero movie is alive and thriving. I’m only saying that these cycles have a finite time in popular culture."

Fortunately, for fans of Spielberg’s productions after a short hiatus after 2012’s Lincoln, Bridge of Spies signals a resurgence for Spielberg with The B.F.G already in editing and sci-fi adventure, Ready Player One in pre-production.

And not a superhero film in sight.
