Stephen Colbert's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug cameo has finally surfaced and has been shared online. Though many may have forgotten the Comedy Central star's Late Show with David Letterman admission in October that he'd scored a minor role in the movie, eagled-eyed fans of The Hobbit have finally spotted Colbert.

Though the 49 year-old political satirist's part is pretty underwhelming - he appears briefly as a hooded figure in a Laketown scene - Colbert can be forever proud that he was part of a franchise so huge and influential as Peter Jackson's. Stills from the scene show Stephen wearing a dark hooded outfit whilst grimacing, his face covered in grime; a far cry from the sharp suits and spectacles he usually dons.

A major fan of the franchise, Colbert is known to have visited Jackson's New Zealand movie set in late 2011. Though he initially claimed that he was merely a guest on the shoot, it is believed that this is when his cameo was recorded. "Peter Jackson invited me to the set last year," he told Playboy Magazine in the November 2012 issue.

"I flew out and watched them shoot some scenes and went to some locations. I saw a 25-minute cut, and it was amazing. Jackson knows I'm a big fan of the films," Colbert said. However, when pressed further by the interviewer, who asked "Are you telling us you're in the Hobbit movie?", Colbert clammed up, teasing "Could be."

Speaking on the Late Show with David Letterman in October, Colbert could reveal more. "I and my wife and my two boys were invited down to New Zealand to play around with the folks in "The Hobbit" by Peter Jackson. We went down there, and we're in a scene in Laketown. I don't want to say where in the movie. It's kind of a "Where's Waldo?"' he told Letterman.

Encouraging the host and the audience to search for him and his links with the fantasy sequel on IMDB, Colbert boasted "I'm kind of the breakout star of 'The Hobbit,' Dave. I don't want to tell anybody where I am, but I am in it." Now fans have found him in this movie, they're sure to be looking out for him in the next, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, which is scheduled for release on the 18th July 2014.
