The iconic Star Wars theme was voted by BBC Radio 3 listeners as the UKs favourite from a selection of twenty classics. Star Wars dominated nearly a quarter of the vote, with Ennio Morricone's The Good, The Bad and the Ugly coming in second. Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story was third.

This isn’t the first time composer John Williams has been celebrated for his seminal work. In fact, the 1977 original, A New Hope, won him a plethora of awards.

He landed an Oscar for Original Score, a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, a BAFTA Award for Best Film Music and three Grammy awards for Best Instrumental Composition, Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or a Television Special and Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

The legendary composer is set to resume work on the franchise as it enters its seventh film, which is being helmed by director J.J Abrams. “Of course I haven’t seen the script—the story is still unknown to me, the new story—but I can’t imagine that there will not be some references to the existing stories that we know,” Williams said of working on Episode VII. “In each case I’ve been able to use the earlier material and develop new material that would co-exist with it and hopefully feel like a part of the fabric of the film.”

While Star Wars will be Williams’ seminal work, he’s been responsible for some the greatest scores Hollywood has ever known. He provided the mellifluous and memorable music for Jaws, E.T, Schindler’s List, Superman (1978), Indiana Jones, and contemporary films like Lincoln, War Horse and the Harry Potter series.
