Girl Power: Throwback Video Shows Spice Girls Confront Sexist Polaroid Ad Directors

Spice Girls

A clip has emerged this week featuring the Spice Girls on the set of a Polaroid commercial they did in the 90s, and expressing the sentiment they are best known for with great effect: that is, Girl Power. Here they stand up to some sexist directors when asked to sex up their school uniform costumes.

Mel B and Geri HornerSpice Girls prove just how powerful Girl Power really is

The best thing about the Spice Girls apart from the infectious chemistry, the movie, the outfits and the tunes was the fact that they upheld everything they believed in. A throwback 'backstage' video from their time on a Polaroid commercial in 1997, where they were dressed in school uniform, sees Mel B, Mel C, Geri Horner (than Halliwell) and Victoria Beckham (then Adams) arguing about being told to flash some flesh for the shoot.

The Spice Girls Tease Reunion In New Video - But Are They Now GEM?

Spice Girls

There's been talks of a Spice Girls reunion going around for a few months now, and now it seems something's finally happening. However, you can probably say goodbye to Posh and Sporty for good because the group have allegedly re-named themselves GEM (for Geri, Emma and Mel B).

Spice GirlsAre the Spice Girls now just GEM?

To coincide with the 20th anniversary of the release of their smash hit debut 'Wannabe', the Spice Girls have announced that some of them - Emma Bunton, Geri Horner and Melanie Brown - will be reuniting, perhaps under the new moniker GEM. They launched a video teasing that they may be preparing for that big London Hyde Park in July 2017 that appeared in headlines this week, but they can't tell us anything about it yet.

Spice Girls Reportedly Planning Huge Hyde Park Gig In July 2017

Spice Girls Geri Horner Victoria Beckham Mel B Melanie C Emma Bunton

Despite a number of setbacks and the fact that only three of their five members are taking part, the Spice Girls are reportedly planning a massive reunion in gig in London’s Hyde Park for July 2017.

The Sun reported on Wednesday evening (July 6th) that Melanie Brown, Geri Horner and Emma Bunton are all on board with the idea to celebrate the 21st anniversary of their 1996 debut single ‘Wannabe’. The three apparently met at Horner’s home last week to discuss the idea

Victoria Beckham and Melanie Chisholm are not said to be involved with the plans – however, they might now reconsider. Both have been reluctant to put their names to a prospective 20th anniversary reunion for the last year or so, and with plans receiving a number of setbacks recently, it looks as if any idea that now comes to fruition will have to be in order to celebrate a 21st anniversary instead.

The Spice Girls' 'Wannabe' Gets A Makeover To Highlight Gender Inequality

Spice Girls Victoria Beckham Richard Curtis

This week marks exactly 20 years since the Spice Girls burst on to the UK music scene with ‘Wannabe’. It’s hard to believe that its been so long since we first saw Mel B, Geri, Mel C, Emma and Victoria and heard the term ‘Girl Power’, but what’s harder to stomach is that two decades later women are still fighting for equality around the world.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the birth of ‘Girl Power’, the video for ‘Wannabe’ has been remade to highlight gender inequality issues faced by women across the globe. Launched by Project Everyone, the #WhatIReallyReallyWant campaign addresses the issues still faced by women today, including education, child marriage, pay inequality and violence.

It's looking less and less likely that Victoria Beckham is going to change her mind about this Spice Girls 20th anniversary reunion thing, and now it's just come out that the band was never where she felt at home anyway. Geri Halliwell Live Performance On Australian Show Is Hilarious [Video]

Oh, bless Geri Halliwell. The former Spice Girl was tasked with performing her new single Half of Me during an appearance on Australian sports programme The Footy Show this week, though things didn't really go to plan.

"How often to do we have an international superstar on the stage?" said one of the Footy Show's presenters before introducing Geri, "She's one of our favourite red-heads, and don't forget she's a member of the Australia's Got Talent show!"

The 41-year-old is releasing her new song down-under and, in fairness, agreed to sing a live rendition on the NRL show in front of an arena full of fans. Unfortunately for Halliwell, she regularly went out of tune and the dancing was frankly ridiculous.

George Michael's Back In The Studio, But After The Olympics, Who’s Listening?

George Michael Spice Girls The Who

George Michael is working on a new album, according to his Twitter feed today (January 25, 2013). The pop star, who made it big in the ‘80s as part of Wham! and went on to have a successful solo career with songs such as ‘Careless Whisper’ and ‘Faith,’ has been talking about the possibility of a new album for some months, but has now confirmed that the recording process is underway, with a tweet that read “Hi everyone, hope you are all well, just to let you know I've been back in the studio a few weeks now, working on the new record....”

After suffering a serious bout of pneumonia, which left him fighting for his life, George Michael managed to stage a remarkable comeback, which culminated in him performing at last year’s London 2012 Olympics ceremony. However, the response to his performance there was probably not what George expected. Dressed in black leather and reflective shades, the 49 year old started off well, with a performance of his old classic, ‘Freedom 90,’ which fit in well with the nostalgic feel of the event, which also saw the likes of The Spice Girls and The Who perform. Everything went wrong for George Michael, though, when he used the opportunity to promote his new single, which was obviously not such a popular choice for the crowd, who were getting into the sing-along nature of the event.

Suddenly, a nation turned on George. No sooner were we praising his physical recovery than we were calling for him to be banished from the world of pop, for his commercial faux pas. So, George, you might be busy recording a new album, but some of us are still sulking over the Olympics, you know.

Was Victoria Beckham Snubbed By Her Fellow Spice Girls At Viva Forever! After Party?

Spice Girls Victoria Beckham Geri Horner Melanie C Emma Bunton

The Spice Girls' renaissance - which began with a performance at the London 2012 Olympics closing ceremony - has continued with the musical, Viva Forever! Of course, no musical premiere is complete without an after party, but did four of The Spice Girls give Posh Spice the cold shoulder?

"Victoria sat on her own table away from the rest of the girls. They didn't speak the whole time she was there," a source told Metro. "She came out of the loo singing Spice Girls songs to Romeo who went in after her,' said another source, "She was giggling with her friends while waiting for him to finish," they continued. "When the DJ played some Spice Girls hits, Posh was nowhere to be seen. Geri, Emma, Mel B and Mel C all got up to dance and tried to remember the moves to Spice Up Your Life, they didn't seem to care, or notice, Victoria was missing."

Mrs Beckham was widely criticised for her role in The Spice girls. People said she couldn't sing, dance or act, but that's really an accusation you could level at most modern pop starts, let alone the rest of the band; a band, which, according to Ginger Spice, isn't done yet. Geri told Heat magazine: "This is a great excuse for us all to have a party tonight! The musical was incredible, we all got really emotional watching it. I just want to see it again now. It was brilliant, it was emotional, funny, exciting, empowering... it was girl power!," adding, "we're going to be around for a long time. You haven't seen the last of us."

Robbie Williams Shows More Love To One Direction; Could They Be As Big As The Spice Girls?

Robbie Williams One Direction Spice Girls Olly Murs

It's all Robbie Williams; as well as announcing his European stadium tour, with his pop lacky Ollie Murs picking up the support slack, he's further endorsed teen-icons One Direction, saying they could be as big as British giants, The Spice Girls, The Metro reports.

"You know, they're quite a power together, very much in the same way the Spice Girls were. The Spice Girls went and took on the world and won and I think the 1D boys have got a similar sort of chemistry," said Williams at The Soho Hotel, London while announcing his tour. "They're all good- looking lads, they're all great singers, and as a five they're a great power." Perhaps Robbie's indulging in youth, viewing 1D as a kind of modern Take That, as he was a young lad when he made it. So how is old(er) age treating the Angels singer as he hits 40? "I'm buzzing (for this tour)," he explains, "it's time to put my foot down and go 'This is what I do'. Pop stars cease to be pop stars at 40 and start being old people singing, don't they? I want to go and seal my place in pop history."

And talking about his recent night out with ladies' man Harry Styles, Robbie said:  'I don't think Harry needs any tips from me about women. He's a magnet like I've never seen before. I wasn't him when I was 18, that didn't happen to me. He's been tarred with the lucky stick hasn't he? He seems to be having a whale of a time.'

Rihanna Turning On Christmas Lights In London For A Cool £5m?

Rihanna Spice Girls

How many Rihannas does it take to change a light bulb? Probably just one, but the question we really want to know the answer to is how much it will cost

Most of us were under the impression that switching on a light required little more than mobility and common sense, in fact I think most of us do it for free tens, if not hundreds of times a day. However, London's Stratford Westfield Centre disagree and are considering forking out £5m to ensure the job is done right. They have asked Rihanna to come to turn on their Christmas lights, and as a woman completely used to the spotlight, she'll certainly not be a phased by a few festive ones.

20,000 fans are expected to turn up to a mini-concert that she'll be obliged to give, should she accept the job and hefty pay check. Rihanna also switched on the Christmas lights at the Shepherds Bush Westfield Centre a couple of years ago. One source told the Sun: “Rihanna’s thrilled she has been asked again... She knows it’s a big deal and is totally up for it — if it fits in with her schedule.”

The singer is due to make an long overdue return to music with an upcoming fourth album, which is scheduled for release later this year. Halliwell joined the rest of the Spice Girls to perform a brief snippet during the Olympic Games closing ceremony, and will be hoping that her return to the spotlight there will buoy interest in the new date. The singer's planning to put in a solo performance next month at an event in aid of Breast Cancer Care, ahead of a cameo in a West End musical.
