Bryan Singer has announced the actors who will play younger versions of the three most famous mutant superheroes in X-Men: Apocalypse. The director revealed the news on Twitter - and there was a nice surprise for fans of HBO's all-conquering Game of Thrones.

Sophie TurnerSophie Turner is joining the X-Men world and will play Jean Grey in Apocalypse.

Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark on the show, will take over the role of Jean Grey - originally played by Famke Janssen. Turner's Thrones co-star Peter Dinklage played the villain in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Apocalypse will also feature a younger version of Cyclops, played by Tye Sheridan, the teen actor who appeared alongside Brad Pitt in The Tree of Life and more recently opposite Nicolas Cage in the critically acclaimed Joe.

The movie is also set to reintroduce Storm - the weather-controlling character famously played by Halle Berry. The new Storm is Alexandra Shipp, best known for playing Aaliyah in the Lifetime biopic.

The trio join James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, as well as newbie Oscar Isaac, who is to play the titular villain.  It is rumored that Channing Tatum could make an appearance as Gambit, while Hugh Jackman could return as Wolverine, and maybe even Ryan Reynolds' as Deadpool.

X-Men Apocalypse is scheduled for a May 27, 2016 release date. It's shaping up to be a huge year for movies with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Divergent: Allegiant - Part 1, The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War, Star Trek 3, Suicide Squad, Gambit and Assassin's Creed all pencilled in for release.

X-Men: First Class in 2011 received critical acclaim and took over $350 million at the global box office.
