Sofia Vergara Responds To Emmy Awards Pedestal "Sexist" Criticism

Sofia Vergara Katie Couric Joe Manganiello

Nothing ever seems to get Sofia Vergara down, and really why would it? She decided her boyfriend was "too hot" to escort her to the Primetime Emmy Awards; Modern Family in which she stars received yet another Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series; and she appears to have had an incredible time at the after parties. So when a number of commentators claimed her stunt at the Emmys was "sexist" and "offensive", Vergara brushed the criticism off with her usual confidence.

Chef Review

Very Good

Like comfort food, this movie has very little nutritional value, but it sure goes down smoothly. This is one of those shamelessly delicious-looking films that makes our mouths water at the tasty dishes that are lovingly created on-camera. And it also has an array of deeply likeable characters, witty cameos and sparkling dialogue to keep us smiling. So who cares that nothing unexpected happens from start to finish? This is a movie we sit back and enjoy without worrying about the appearance of a plot twist.

The title character is Carl (played by writer-director Jon Favreau), the chef at a top Los Angeles restaurant that is stuck in a rut because the owner (Dustin Hoffman) refuses to change anything on the menu. When a snooty food critic (Oliver Platt) criticises Carl for his tired and predictable cuisine, Carl's reaction sparks an angry Twitter war. In a fit of anger, Carl quits his job then hatches a plan to get back to his roots while bonding with Percy (Emjay Anthony), his pre-teen son with spicy ex-wife Inez (Sofia Vergara). So Carl and his sidekick Martin (John Leguizamo) take Percy to Miami to refurbish food truck and drive back to California, along the way building a reputation and perfecting their Latin-infused menu.

Since a complex plot would just be distracting, this film coasts on the charisma of its likeable cast, throwing in lively side roles for the likes of Scarlett Johansson as a restaurant colleague, Bobby Cannavale as a fellow chef and most memorably Robert Downey Jr. as Inez's hilariously nutty ex. Everyone is relaxed and effortlessly funny, which makes the interaction feel amusing and never remotely forced. While this is easily Favreau's most assured work as a director (that's including the first two Iron Man movies), this is also his most generous performance too. He infuses the whole film with easy-going charm.

Fading Gigolo Review

Very Good

With a witty observational script, amusing characters and a jazzy sense of life in New York, this feels like an old-fashioned Woody Allen movie, even though Allen merely costars in it. Instead, it was written and directed by leading actor John Turturro, with an easy-going charm that's irresistible even if it feels vaguely dated. And despite its potentially controversial premise, the film is so gentle that it's unlikely to ruffle many feathers.

Turturro stars as Fioravante, a florist whose life hasn't gone as planned. His one-time mentor Murray (Allen) has just been forced to close his grandfather's rare-book shop, and with too much time on his hand has started working on Fior's life. Murray thinks Fior could make a living as an escort, and sends him on a date with his dermatologist (Sharon Stone). When that goes well, a string of wealthy clients follow, including the man-eating Selima (Sofia Vergara). But one of Murray's friends is more reluctant: the devout Avigail (Vanessa Paradis) is a widowed rabbi's wife who can't have contact with other men. As she and Fior begin a tentative friendship, there might be something meaningful developing. Then a jealous community cop (Schreiber) notices that something is amiss.

As a director, Turturro keeps the scenes grounded in real situations that centre on the characters rather than the machinations of the plot. This offers a lively depiction of this neighbourhood as a melting pot of African-Americans, Italians and Hasidic Jews who are part of each others' lives. Some of this might feel a bit contrived (Murray also adopts a sprawling black family), but the interaction is jaggedly funny and packed with a generous stream of honest emotion.

Sofia Vergara has been speaking about her nerves at shooting a ménage a trois with Sharon Stone and John Turturro in Woody Allen's romantic drama Fading Gigolo. The movie - easily the least talked about bit of cinema ever - has a limited release in the U.S this weekend.

'Chef' Trailer: Do Not Watch While Hungry [Trailer + Pictures]

Jon Favreau Scarlett Johansson Dustin Hoffman Sofia Vergara

You know the supermarket rule – don’t go food shopping when you’re hungry? Well the same applies to watching the trailer for Jon Favreau’s Chef. The beautifully shot, beautifully prepared food will have you attempting a rare venison sandwich with horseradish foam and wild rocket puree, and we all know that can’t happen.

Chef movieIt's all about the food in 'Chef'

The story for ‘Chef’ sees Carl Casper (Favreau) given an ultimatum: cook Dustin Hoffman’s menu or don’t cook in his restaurant. Of course, the film would be pretty boring if he went ahead gave in to his mean boss, so instead he decides to fall off the wagon somewhat, become the laughing stock of an already snobbish culinary zeitgeist, and win back his respect and friends through an intrepid street food venture.

Chef Trailer

Carl Casper is a chef working at one of the top restaurants of Miami. Food is his ultimate passion in life and so he is utterly heartbroken when his boss forces him to cook a 'safer' menu, bypassing his usually ambitious creations. The change came about when it was found that a formidable food critic would be visiting the establishment, but, as it turns out, the menu switch was a bad idea and Carl doesn't take his subsequent criticism very well at all. After reading his bad review and going viral, he sends out a badly judged post over Twitter and is thus forced to leave his post at the eatery. Instead, he sets up his own food truck, delivering his food on wheels to anyone willing to try a new culinary experience, and along the way uses it to reconnect with his young son and ex-wife.

'Chef' is brilliant comedy about self-discovery, passion and drive. The movie's main star, Primetime Emmy nominated Jon Favreau ('Cowboys & Aliens', 'Iron Man', 'Elf', 'Zathura: A Space Adventure'), was also responsible for the direction, production and screenplay and it made its premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in March. It is due for UK release on June 18th 2014.

When you’re the man behind the camera of $1.2 billion worth of films (Iron Man 1 & 2) then you keep on churning out sequels until you can buy a country and name it after yourself, don’t you? Jon Favreau doesn’t: he walked from Marvel to make films about Cowboys & Aliens, and ‘Chef’, which you can see more of with the fantastic new clip below.

‘Chef’ tells the story of a disgruntled chef, dismissed from his flagging restaurant and seemingly back to square one in the cookery game. But instead of stepping getting back on the ladder – ready to climb and climb – our chef decides to take his cooking to the streets by opening up a food van, capturing the current zeitgeist of ‘street eats’ enjoyed by foodies and hipsters alike.

Carl Casper is a well-known chef from Miami who works in a trendy LA restaurant much lauded by critics. However, when one particularly formidable critic shows up to taste Casper's food, his culinary creativity is thrown into question when his boss requests he make something a little more 'safe' than his usual creations. Unfortunately for Casper, he doesn't take criticism too well and loses his cool in a tirade which is captured on film and subsequently goes viral across all social mediums. Now jobless and unsure of his own passions, he returns to Miami to set up a food truck by the name of El Jefe Cubanos in a bid to regain some of his ingenuity and, of course, respect. The journey also sees him reconnect with his wealthy ex-wife and young son as the family attempt to rebuild the bonds between them.

Machete Cortez is back, and this time he's got the President of the United States for a boss as he embarks on his most outrageous and dangerous adventure yet. In the sequel to 2010's Machete, Robert Rodriguez and Danny Trejo are both back as director and star respectively, in a film that has plenty to offer if you're up for a B-movie spectacle. It not, you should probably heed the words of warning from most critics, and avoid Machete Kills at all costs. Just go see Gravity or Captain Phillips this weekend instead.

Machete Kills Review

OK

Robert Rodriguez returns to Grindhouse territory with this B-movie spoof sequel that mixes hilariously knowing jokes with painfully stiff storytelling. Fans of the genre will love it, but those expecting a sense of narrative momentum will find themselves bored when the plot stalls about halfway in. And the rampant misogynistic smirking should be too much for anyone.

After the events of the 2010 original (which itself was based on a mock-trailer from 2007's Grindhouse double bill), the former Mexican agent Machete (Trejo) has been secretly working with US Immigration. After a bust goes badly wrong, he is assigned by the US President (Sheen, performing under his birth-name Carlos Estevez) to capture psychotic drug kingpin Mendez (Bichir) in Mexico. Working with his beauty-queen contact (Heard), he heads into the danger zone pursued by the master-of-disguise Camaleon and immediately running afoul of a vindictive brothel madame (Vergara). Along the way he discovers that the real villain is a defence contractor (Gibson) back in America, so he asks his former partner-in-crime (Michelle Rodriguez) for some help.

Every scene overflows with hyper-violent action and near-naked babes with guns. And the fast-paced mayhem is frequently played out as wacky slapstick, with movie in-jokes and a general sense of chaos. Aside from the amusingly straight-faced Trejo, the actors play everything for laughs. Gibson chomps mercilessly on the scenery during his overlong scenes, while Sheen plays with his own personal history while winking knowingly to the camera. There's also a continuous parade of A-list cameos, including Gaga, Gooding and Banderas hamming up their silly scenes for all they're worth.

It’s a good thing Machete and its stars don’t take themselves too seriously, because one look at the reviews would be enough to kick off a pretty serious binge. Still, the latest in the franchise – Machete Kills – is more midnight popcorn than early evening wine.

He is charged with a stopping madman revolutionary and eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has a plan to plunge the world into a dystopian nightmare.

Actor Dustin Hoffman can now breathe a sigh of relief after the surgery he underwent to treat his cancer was a success. With little confirmed information regarding the nature or type of cancer, Hoffman's fans should simply be relieved that the twice Oscar-winning actor is still alive and well.

In a statement reported by People magazine, Hoffman's publicist Jodi Gottlieb confirmed that the 75 year-old is doing well: "It was detected early and he has been surgically cured," she said, "Dustin is feeling great and is in good health." Apparently the actor and director will undergo doctor-recommended preventative treatments to minimise any chance of a recurrence of what was allegedly throat cancer in the future.

Let The People Decide! People Choice Awards 2013 Nominees Announced

Channing Tatum Johnny Depp Joseph Gordon-Levitt Zooey Deschanel Will Smith Jane Lynch Sofia Vergara

The Peoples Choice Awards give the general public a chance to decide whose acceptance speech they want to hear. Gone are the stuffy critics and 'experts' who normally plump for how good a film, or concentrate on someone's artistic integrity when making award decisions; in are the general public, who like wardrobe malfunctions and when people treat each other awfully.

So who's up for public recognition of the entertainment kind? Perhaps one of the biggest categories is 'favourite movie actor', in which Channing Tatum, Johnny Depp, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Robert Downey Jr. and Will Smith are all in the running. We think Channing will receive the nod because of his recent Sexiest Man Alive award, but we hope Joseph Gordon-Levitt will win, because of his excellent work in Looper. On a more light-hearted note, the people will have Jane Lynch, Kaley Cuoco, Lea Michele, Sofia Vergara and Zooey Deschanel to choose from in the best comedy actress category. We think Kayley Cuoco will win despite being under pressure from Deschanel in her kooky New Girl role. The Big Bang Theory's clout should prevail, though.

The film portion of the night features a list of blockbusters, and is 80% comprised of movies beginning with 'the'; people like stuff with 'the' stuck on. The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hunger Games and Snow White and the Huntsman are fighting it out. We hope Snow White wins. We won't tell you why. Catch the awards live on CBS, January 9th, 2012.

Forbes' Television Top Earners Revealed: Ashton Kutcher Leads The Pack.

Ashton Kutcher Hugh Laurie Ray Romano Tim Allen Jon Cryer Jim Parsons Sofia Vergara Felicity Huffman Eva Longoria

Two-and-a-Half Men is the show that forks out the most for its lead actors; last year Charlie Sheen topped Forbes' list of TV's Highest-Paid TV Actors list with $40m and this year its new lead Ashton Kutcher has taken over the prestigious spot, albeit with a decidedly smaller sum of just $26m.

Hugh Laurie for his role in 'House' and Ray Romano, for a now cancelled 'Men of a Certain Age' were runners up to Kutcher, each raking in $18m. We'd all be happy to plum for second place in this race. Aside from Laurie, it was entirely sitcom actors that scored the bigtime in this list, with stars of 30 Rock, Last Man Standing, Men, and The Big Bang Theory - Alec Baldwin, family favourite Tim Allen, Jon Cryer, and Jim Parsons and Alan Galecki, respectively, all managing to make it into the top ten.

However, as much as it's always great to celebrate in the successes of others, for women in the equivalent category, financial success seems to not be quite so easy. Sophia Vergara from Modern Family is this year's female top earner, but at just (ha! just?) $19m, she's lagging behind Kutcher by $7m! Plus, the genres in which these women find their careers is far more varied than men - still including comedy, but also drama, reality and medical dramas all find their way into the list. Desperate Housewives is one show that truly shows women multitasking, and Felicity Huffman and Eva Longoria, two stars of the show, both appear in the top ten. Although men still earn more than women, it seems the ladies can take the prize for versatility.

The Three Stooges Review

OK
The Farrelly brothers return to the vacuously silly style of Dumb and Dumber for this gently idiotic comedy that recreates the iconic knucklehead trio that epitomised movie slapstick from the 1930s to the 1970s. Intriguingly, the film is warm and wacky, only rarely dips into today's more cynical, referential sense of humour. Clearly, the Farrellys have a real affection for the Three Stooges, as do the actors who recreate them.

The story starts as we watch Larry, Moe and Curly (Hayes, Diamantopoulos and Sasso) growing up in an orphanage, watched over by Mother Superior (Lynch) and several rather frazzled nuns (including Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson and Curb Your Enthusiasm's Larry David). But when the orphanage is threatened with closure, the clueless trio heads out to raise the cash needed to save it. They immediately run into the shamelessly wealthy Lydia (Vergara), who hires them to bump off her husband so she can run off with his business partner (Bierko). But of course everything goes crazily wrong.

The team that made the thin-but-enjoyable Valentine's Day in 2010 reunites for another massively overextended rom-com with a remarkable A-list ensemble. But this time the stories and filmmaking overdose on ill-conceived schmaltz.

As the countdown to 2012 begins, an executive (Swank) is frazzled about a technical glitch in the iconic Time's Square ball-drop. Meanwhile, a courier (Efron) is trying to help a frumpy secretary (Pfeiffer) achieve her dreams. A chef (Heigl) is catering a glittering event while trying to avoid her rock star ex (Bon Jovi), whose back-up singer (Michele) is stuck in a lift with a lovelorn slacker (Kutcher). A mother (Parker) is worried about her teen daughter (Breslin). And a tuxedoed millionaire (Duhamel) is trying to get to an important event in the city.

The Three Stooges Trailer

The Three Stooges is a comic caper, following the lives of three men who were left on the doorstep of an orphanage when they were babies. This updated version of the 1930s vaudeville act of the same name sees the familiar characters of Larry, Moe and Curly try to save their childhood orphanage from closure. In the process, they become embroiled in a bizarre murder plot, as well as finding themselves somehow starring in a phenomenally successful reality TV show.

Happy Feet Two Review

Very Good
Despite the fact that it's driven by a weakly developed plot, this penguin adventure is just as much fun as 2006's Happy Feet. It's a riot of colourful characters and vividly animated settings, with a few great songs thrown in to keep our feet tapping along.

Mumble (Wood) thinks he's inadequate as a father since his non-dancing son Erik (Acres) feels like such an outsider. So when Erik runs off to visit the guru Lovelace (Williams) and meet flying penguin star Sven (Azaria), Mumble follows.

Meanwhile back home, an ice-shelf collapse has trapped the entire Emperor colony, so now Mumble, Erik and Lovelace's colony must find a solution. Perhaps some passing humans can help. Or a gang of tetchy sea elephants. Or maybe it'll be down to two renegade krills (Pitt and Damon) who are trying to find their individuality.

The Smurfs Review

OK
A simplistic approach means that this charming adventure-comedy will only appeal to very young children. While it's lively and enjoyably silly, there's just not enough wit in the story or characters, nor enough skill in the animation.

Life is idyllic for the tiny blue Smurfs, whose village is hidden from view in a European valley. But the evil-but-hapless wizard Gargamel (Azaria) wants to capture their magical essence and, when he finds their village, he chases six of them through a vortex that dumps them into Manhattan. Lost in the city, the Smurfs befriend Patrick (Harris) and his pregnant wife Grace (Mays), whose help they need to both escape Gargamel and regenerate the vortex to get home.

Meanwhile, Patrick's under pressure from his boss (Vergara) to come up with an ad campaign.

Happy Feet 2 - Trailer & Featurette

While the Emperor penguins of Antarctica find their mate by singing their 'heartsong', Mumble is different. Instead of singing, he has a talent for tap-dancing and it was this that won the affections of his old friend Gloria. His unique gift also helped ban overfishing in Antarctica which saved the fish population from extinction.

Four Brothers Review

Weak

Mark Wahlberg is perfectly cast in "Four Brothers" as an angry, scruffy Detroit greaseball who returns home for the first time in years to avenge his foster-mother's murder during a convenience store robbery.

While not an actor known for his emotional range, here his soft-featured scowl embodies resounding heartbreak without giving an inch on the kind of toughness and bravado that makes his character a loose cannon. How loose? He even tells the investigating cops (one an old friend played by the sublime Terrence Howard) who come to pay their respects that "I'm not here for the funeral."

Reunited with his three brothers -- fellow former delinquents adopted by the kindly but adamant Evelyn Mercer (Fionnula Flanagan), and played by Garrett Hedlund ("Troy") and talented rappers-turned-actors Andre Benjamin and Tyrese Gibson -- it isn't long before they're literally beating a path through the ghetto toward any suspects they can get their hands on. And it isn't long after that before a conspiracy begins to emerge (the details of which are never entirely clear) involving bankruptcy and insurance money, connections to the mob, and crooked cops and city councilmen.
