Childhood: Skrillex was born in Highland Park, Northeast Los Angeles before moving to Forest Hill, San Francisco aged 2. He attended a boarding school in the Mojave Desert, Las Vegas aged 9 and 10 before moving back to California and attending a private academy of arts. After being bullied, he was home-schooled from the age of 14 and found out that he was adopted in 2004. He attended punk gigs and raves as a teenager in LA.

Career: Skrillex started out his musical career in the rock band From First To Last in 2004 after asking frontman Matt Good if he could take up guitar on their debut album. However, he was made lead singer with Good on guitar after producers heard Skrillex's vocals. He released two albums with the band: 'Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count' and 'Heroine' before leaving in 2007 to pursue a solo career.

During his time in the band, he suffered vocal complications which were later corrected through surgery. He then released three demos on Myspace and made several others available on his tour with Team Sleep. In 2008, he toured alongside All Time Low, The Rocket Summer, The Matches and Forever the Sickest Kids.

He released his first EP 'Gypsyhook EP' in 2009 and later appeared at Bamboozle as part of the band Sonny and the Blood Monkeys. Having previously been known as Twipz, he released his debut EP, 'My Name is Skrillex', in 2010. He featured on Bring Me The Horizon's third album and toured with Deadmau5 after signing to his label on which he release second EP 'Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites'.

In 2011, he collaborated with Korn on their track 'Get Up' and later performed with them at Coachella 2011. Later in 2011, he released his third EP 'More Monsters and Sprites' and launched his record label OWSLA. He also collaborated with Knife Party and Kaskade. He announced in November 2011 that he was intending to release his album 'Voltage' but it never came to fruition. He later released his 'Bangarang' EP.

In 2012, he got involved with a side project called Dog Blood with Boys Noize and they released an EP, 'Next Order/Middle Finger'. He also released a limited edition triple vinyl box set and wrote the song 'Bug Hunt' for the animated movie 'Wreck-It Ralph'. Altogether he has so far won three Grammy awards.

Personal Life: Earlier in 2012, Skrillex was reported to be dating singer Ellie Goulding after working with him on his track 'Summit'. However, due to their busy schedules and long distances apart, they split in October.

Win Divergent On DVD With The Soundtrack

The hit action flick Divergent hit cinemas with a bang earlier this year. Adapted from the popular trilogy of novels by Veronica Roth and set within a dystopian, post apocalyptic Chicago with a population divided into distinct factions based on their human virtues, it was only a matter of time until words were transformed into a slick, action packed big screen adaptation.

The young and talented Shailene Woodley was the actress carefully selected to tell the thrilling story of Tris Prior who learns that she is Divergent and therefore will never be able to fit into any of these factions whilst quickly learning that there is a sinister plot brewing in her seemingly perfect society.

Made In America Trailer

Made in America Festival is an annual music event founded by rapper and businessman Jay-Z in 2012. Following its inaugural year, it was announced to take place in Los Angeles for the later events and its arrival has since become an important symbol of unity. Jay-Z created the festival in a bid to join together musicians of all genres, creeds and cultures to emphasise the bond between music-lovers regardless of any animosity that may have existed between hip hop artists, rock artists and pop artists in the past. It is an attempt to build a world of peace and diversity because, in the words of Run DMC star Darryl McDaniels, 'Music succeeds where politics and religion fail'.

'Made In America' is a music documentary based on the new festival of the same name founded by Jay-Z who is also the movie's executive producer. It has been directed by double Oscar winner Ron Howard ('The Da Vinci Code', 'Apollo 13', 'Rush', 'A Beautiful Mind') and features behind-the-scenes clips and interviews of various music superstars including Run DMC, Rita Ora, Kanye West, Janelle Monáe, Tyler The Creator, Skrillex, Santigold and The Hives. The film premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and was nominated for 'Outstanding Television Documentary' at the Black Reel Awards.

Ultra Music Festival turned out to be a bit of a rollercoaster of a weekend for everyone this year but, as usual, it's been three days of some of the most explosive electronic acts of our generation.

Ultra Music Festival 2014 logo

It was a terribly disappointing moment for festival goers (and, indeed, viewers; those who were viewing it live online) when it was announced that Saturday's main stage headliner Avicii would not make it to Miami for his set after being hospitalised earlier in the week for an emergency operation. However, that initial fan frustration was greatly eased by the arrival of Deadmau5, who took the Swedish DJ's place to much delightful surprise. Further entertainment came with some eagerly anticipated headline sets from Tiesto and Hardwell on the Friday and Sunday respectively.

Skrillex Releases Surprise New Album "Recess": But Is He Copying Beyonce?

Skrillex

Does anyone else remember when British dubstep producer and DJ, Rusko apologised for playing an inadvertent role in the creation of musical sub-genre ‘brostep’? The dubstep DJ admitted “Brostep is sort of my fault, but now I’ve started to hate it in a way...I kind of took it there and now everyone else has taken it too far. I tried to put a bit more energy into it...Now I think it’s gone too far, it’s got too noisy for noisy’s sake...it’s lost a little bit of the feeling”.

skrillex recess In the past, Skrillex has had a very loyal fan base

Clearly, Skrillex didn’t read this interview/get the memo that other DJs had begun to find brostep pretty loud and obnoxious, because he’s released a surprise album. To be fair to him, his pile of Grammys and loyal fans probably spurred him on!

Weather-Worries Are Looking Few For Leeds And Reading Festival 2013

Reading & Leeds Logo
It may be nearing the end of the summer but Leeds and Reading Festival 2013 goers don't have much to worry about in terms of the unpredictable English weather this weekend (August 23rd - 25th).

The Met Office website has suggested some okay weather for Friday and Saturday with information still to come for Sunday. According to them, Leeds can expect temperatures going up to 23 degrees on Friday though mostly accompanied by clouds, while the following day seems to be a little cooler with a good chance of rain for most of the day before clearing up towards the evening. As for Reading, you lucky Southerners; you can expect rather a sunny morning and temperatures of possibly 25 degrees on the first day, though Saturday in Reading will perhaps also see some spots of rain before the evening approaches.

BBC Weather appears to be more optimistic, seeing 24 degree temperatures in Leeds and 26 in Reading on the Friday, though it looks mildly wet for most of the day on Saturday in Leeds and fairly bright in Reading. Sunday could be the nicest day of the weekend as campers emerge from their tents with their penultimate hangovers to find it brightening up in Leeds at 25 degrees and even reaching 27 in Reading. Other sources suggest similar forecasts, though there have been suggestions of a little rain on the Friday; possibly not disposable raincoat and heavy-duty wellies style weather, however.

Skrillex Hair Goes Up In Flames! Birthday Wish Backfires

Skrillex

There are many who will be disappointed that it’s only his hair that went up in flames, but this is a start at least. EDM sensation Skrillex – a man whose tracks have provided equal euphoria and derision among those who’ve heard them – gave himself a rather nasty birthday shock on Tuesday night (January 15), after leaning over to blow the candles out on his cake, accidentally draping his lengthy mane of hair into the flames.

TMZ reports that the DJ was having a private birthday bash in Los Angeles and was having ‘Happy Birthday’ sang at him when the incident happened. In fairness to him, he handled it a lot better than Michael Jackson when something similar happened to him when shooting a Pepsi ad in the 80’s and, once it had been pointed out to him, snuffed the fire out quickly, having a good laugh at it in the process. Nice one.

Many would rather his career had gone up in flame; the producer’s hard-edged take on dub-step has really grated with a few, whilst at the same time caused a huge surge in interest in dance music by America’s youth. The producer hasn’t as yet made a full-length album, though his late 2011 EP Bangarang managed to make it to number 14 on the US Billboard 200.

A Week In Music – Everything Everything Avoid Second Album Syndrome With 'Arc,' Paul Weller's 'Dragonfly' Is A "Victory Lap," Jools Holland Teams Up With The Stars

Albums of Note... Deftly side-stepping the pitfalls of ‘second album syndrome,’ Everything Everything have stepped things up a notch with second album Arc, which looks set to raise their profile even further. They’ve retained their quirky dance geek sound, but this time around, the songs have a darker, more emotional sound. Where their debut was playful, a newfound intensity can be found on this follow-up“Arc offers more drama and intensity than the playful-ness we heard on Man Alive, Everything Everything's 2010-released debut… each track stands in its own right; nothing is filler and Arc maintains interest throughout; it's a much more mature offering than Everything Everything's previous, particularly with the likes of the gentle, piano-backed 'The Peaks, which sensitively showcases their trademark falsetto vocals in an atmospheric setting.”

Paul Weller’s latest release, the ‘Dragonfly EP’ is described by our reviewer as a “victory lap.” The EP contains a number of unreleased tracks from the Modfather’s trilogy of experimental albums released in 2012. Described as “by no means essential for the casual fan,” the tracks contained herein are a step away from the sonic experimentation of the albums and are closer to his early solo days.“The Dragonfly EP is therefore well worth your time if you have any interest in Weller's more recent output. However, for the more casual listener, it may seem like it's business as usual for the Modfather. The 5 additional songs certainly deserve to be heard, and it's a welcome move that they haven't just ended up on the cutting room floor.”
