Despite Cowell's Return, 'Strictly' Topples X-Factor In Sunday Ratings

Simon Cowell Cheryl Cole Strictly Come Dancing

It is a battle that could have perhaps been avoided had either the BBC or ITV backed down and rescheduled, but Strictly Come Dancing and The X-Factor went head-to-head for the first time this year on Sunday, with the dancing reality show winning out. ITV will have hoped the return of Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell would have been enough to pip its rival - airing its first season without Bruce Forsyth - though it wasn't to be.

Simon CowellThe return of Simon Cowell was not enough for The X-Factor to beat Strictly

Strictly returned with 8.4 million viewers on Sunday - a 33.7% share of the audience between 8pm and 9.15pm. The X-Factor had to settle for second place, with 7.6 million viewers and a 27.9% share between 8pm and 9.05pm.

One Direction's Drug Scandal: Is Smoking Marijuana Considered Shocking Anymore?

One Direction Louis Tomlinson Zayn Malik Liam Payne Harry Styles Niall Horan Simon Cowell Miley Cyrus

Being caught with a joint is really nothing new in the world of pop, especially amongst those aggressively seeking a change of image that will subsequently add a semblance of ‘edge’ to their persona. For child stars especially, in attempts to free themselves from their enforced clean-cut youth and iconic childhood roles, to indulge in the smoking of marijuana is the go-to method of both distancing oneself from the past and declaring oneself as a fully independent adult.

One Direction
The group have come under fire from the tabloids for Zayn and Louis' actions.

The celebrity world abounds with examples of such exploits. Remember the media storm over Justin Bieber’s incident with a “suspicious cigarette” or Miley Cyrus’ bong exploits, which have now evolved into her free and consistent utilization of marijuana symbolism? The celebrity media loves a scandal more than a Republican loves his right to bear firearms, but whilst the current One Direction drug ‘scandal’ has rather predictably been plastered all over the tabloid’s front pages, the majority of the public greets it with a collective shrug of the shoulders. They are, after all, adolescents- the prime age for indulging in experimentation with illicit substances and activities. Most adults will have indulged in similar instances of experimentation with an array substances at a similar age to these patchy-bearded pop stars. In terms of the pop world, this particular act has been seen many times before; so many times, in fact, that the whole ‘rebellion’ phase is part and parcel of the child actor discourse. Some take it just a little too far, and the ensuing descent into drugs has unfortunately claimed the lives of many of Hollywood’s exploited youngsters.

She declared that the "money making end of music is taking over," admitting that when she was an emerging artist she was asked to grow out her hair and wear revealing outfits, which prompted her to shave off her own hair.

In the interview, which will be published in the October edition of Esquire UK, Cowell doesn't make many references to his own impending dip into fatherhood, indicating that the interview may have taken place before the news of his affair and eventual pregnancy with Silverman was made public. If this is so, Cowell's ideals may have changed a little, but it is likely that TV's 'Mr Nasty' will still be as stern as ever in his personal ethos.

One Direction: This Is Us Review

Good

Filmmaker Spurlock (Super Size Me) is known for his investigative wit, but there's none of that in this on-message doc about the most successful boy band in history. Still, the fans won't be able to get enough of the backstage antics and lively performance clips. And those unfamiliar with One Direction will have fun too. Just don't expect to learn much about these five young men who continually say, "Back when we were little," even though they're still only 19-21 years old.

The filmmakers follow Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis on their world tour, visiting four continents as they play nearly 130 concerts for their hysterical fans, who all seem to be pre-teen girls. As we see them larking around on-stage, in the wings and on their tour bus, we also get their back-story, as they auditioned individually for The X Factor in 2010 and were assembled as a group in a spontaneous decision by Cowell. Their global success is the result of a viral Twitter onslaught, and the fans also get their say on-screen, gushing with their love for these five skinny, mop-haired guys who have serious vocal talents but have yet to prove themselves as musicians.

While the film captures the boys' strong camaraderie, cheeky energy and constant pranks (including silly Jackass-style closing-credits clips), we never really learn much about them. There is no attempt to explore their off-stage identities, what they do in their down-time, their romantic lives or musical inspirations. Some depth is provided in interviews with their parents, who offer emotional insight into how fame has changed their families. Aside from some lively off-handed moments, their interviews feel carefully media-trained, and there's no commentary from anyone outside their inner circle. But they emerge as grounded, likeable young guys who know how lucky they are, so they're making the most of their success in the short time they have at the top.

Did Simon Cowell's Affair With Married Socialite Cause Split From Fiancée Mezhgan Hussainy?

Simon Cowell Lauren Silverman Mezhgan Hussainy

It's all getting a bit confusing: rumours are now bouncing about that Cowell ended his engagement with his fiancée in April 2012 because he was seeing Lauren Silverman. Cowell split unexpectedly from make-up artist Mezhgan Hussainy unexpectedly last year. She chose not to dish out any dirt on him at the time but new images of Cowell and Lauren last year on TMZ suggest that the pair were a little too close in August 2012 having been spotted what looks like kissing on a yacht, despite both having significant others. The photos hint that their affair had begun long before originally thought.

The 53 year-old X Factor judge has had a lot of fingers pointed at him in the last few days; not least from MRS. Silverman's now-ex-husband Andrew Silverman who reportedly introduced the pair on holiday in Barbados.

TV host Holly Willoughby, who has previously earned herself the nickname 'Holly Willoughbooby' for wearing clothing that flashes off her rather er...ample cleavage, drew attention to herself yet again on Saturday's (22 June) final of BBC singing talent contest The Voice.

The 2.5 hour show saw Northern Irish Andrea Begley sing her way to victory, but Holly's outfit gave the partially-sighted 27 year-old a run for her money in the publicity stakes, according to The Independent.

The gown in question was a Gucci black silk floor length piece from their 2012 collection, featuring floral lace embellishments and cascading Swarovski crystals to create a rather deep V down the chest - the latter aspect created quite a stir amongst viewers.

The public apology following Natalie Holt’s eggy protest against Simon Cowell on the Britain’s Got Talent final seemed to draw a line under the matter, but having reconsidered her apology, the 30-year-old violinist has decided to take it right back.

“I planned to do it once the song was finished but I got a bit nervous and went slightly early, she explained of her stunt. “I sincerely apologise for overshadowing their moment as well as to anyone watching who felt that their evening’s entertainment was marred or even ruined,” she added, before a vital caveat was revealed. “However, I am not sorry for pelting Simon Cowell with eggs. I think he has too much power and influence in the entertainment industry. I felt that, on behalf of musicians everywhere, this is an institution and a man that needed standing up to.”

Holt claims she has received messaged of support from many high-profile musicians who, for reasons we can all probably understand, are “unwilling to express their support publicly”. She said: “I don’t dislike Cowell personally, I don’t like what he represents.”

Jennifer Lopez gave UK viewers of Simon Cowell's Britains Got Talent a real eyeful on Tuesday night, performing her new single 'Live It Up' while wearing a skimpy black leotard that barely covered her famous behind. Twitter immediately sprang into action, with some parents concerned about the "inappropriate" nature of her performance on what is considered a family show, with some young children actually performing.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a spokesperson for TV regualtor Ofcom said, "Ofcom can confirm that it has received complaints about the Britain's Got Talent broadcast last night, which we are assessing but not currently investigating." One viewer on Twitter said, "BGT does #jenniferlopez realise it's a family show - only thing missing was the pole - cover up your cheeks please!" though judge Simon Cowell was pretty happy with how things went, telling Lopez, "Seriously, J-Lo. If anyone wants to know how you do it. That's how you do it,' he said. "Seriously world class."

For what it's worth, Lopez herself seemed pretty oblivious to any concerns and happily posted an Instagram of the R&B star being held up by various dancers. "Thanks @GotTalent for a great night #liveitup," she added.

Stringy Beef! Bruce Forsyth Takes Pop At Simon Cowell's 'Britain's Got Talent'

Bruce Forsyth Simon Cowell

Bruce Forsyth is irked at Simon Cowell for allowing young children to compete on his reality talent contests, and he took to BBC Radio 5 Live to tell them exactly why.

According to The Sun, the veteran TV presenter was critical of Britain’s Got Talent, saying that Cowell was putting kids through an ordeal. They reported that he’s since told the radio station, “The thing I object to is, I don’t think they should put young children through such an emotional thing.” His interview did point out that Forsyth began in entertainment aged just 14, but he said in reply: “Yeah, but not on television in front of millions. That is the difference. Have a children’s Britain’s Got Talent and let all children be in it. There is nothing wrong with that at all. But to put them on at that time of the evening with millions watching and the emotion, that could be maybe a bit disastrous for a child and a memory that could not do them a lot of good.”

The first live show of the latest Britain’s Got Talent series took place on Monday (May 27, 2013), with Cowell commenting to dance troupe Youth Creation: “Someone, Mr Grumpy, said we shouldn’t have children your age on the show.” He also praised 11-year-old singer Arisxandra Libantino, saying: “I’d like to dedicate this one to Bruce.” Cowell’s apparently sick of people having a go at his shows, with one insider commenting “Simon is sick of people slagging off his shows. If anyone has a go he’s going to hit back at them live on air.”

BGT Finalists Aren't Shaken By Bruce Forsyth's Derogatory Comments

Bruce Forsyth Britain's Got Talent Simon Cowell

Britain's Got Talent was blasted by telly host and national treasure Bruce Forsyth this week, with the veteran host commenting on the "damaging" effect appearing on the show could have on children. Despite his words, it seems as though some people involved in this years show have failed to acknowledge Brucie's point, saying they see no potentially harmful side-effects of appearing in the show.

Speaking on Richard Bacon's 5 Live show on Monday (May 27), Brucie said that although he admires the format of BGT, he could never approve of having young children take part. He told Bacon, "To put them on that time of the evening with millions watching, the great big theatre and the emotions - it could be disastrous for a child."

On Monday's live BGT show, Cowell addressed the comments himself, referring to Forsyth as "Mr Grumpy," which is very rich coming from Cowell. Speaking after the performances of young performers Youth Creation and Arisxandra Libantino, who is 11-years-old, he said, "If you've got it, you've got it, who cares how old you are? It was one of the best performances of the night and I'd like to dedicate this one to Bruce."

Kelly Rowland Left In Tears After Performing 'Dirty Laundry' Live In D.C. [Video]

Kelly Rowland Beyonce Knowles Simon Cowell

Kelly Rowland debuted her latest song 'Dirty Laundry' online earlier this month and immediately it began to cause a storm thanks to it's stark and revealing lyrics and back-to-basics R&B style used by Rowland in favour of her dance-orientated singles of late. During a concert at The Fillmore Silver Springs in Washington D.C. last night the song's subject clearly got too much for the singer, as she began crying during a heartfelt rendition of the new single halfway through her set.

Rowland is currently taking her 'Lights Out Tour' across America and her first stop off came last night at the D.C. show. The singer had performed a few track already and began her rendition of the The-Dream collaboration before being forced to stop after singing the line "He turned me against my sister, I missed ya," after which the singer sat in a hunched position with her face away from the audience at the center of the stage. It looked as though she might not be able to carry on but the determined singer wiped her eyes and continued the rest of the song, remaining professional throughout the rest of the show.

For those of you who haven't heard the track, it is an emotion-filled effort in which she admits her jealousy towards Destiny's Child bandmate Beyoncé Knowles, as well as revealing that while Beyoncé's success was exploding she was also involved in an abusive relationship. The song was uploaded to her SoundCloud earlier this month and is taken from her forthcoming album Talk A Good Game.

X-Factor The Musical? Not Quite – ‘I Can’t Sing’ To Hit Theatres February

Harry Hill Simon Cowell

While an X-Factor musical would actually make loads of money – people seem to lap that stuff up – Harry Hill thought of it first. Of course, his is a spoof version called I Can’t Sing…

The big-collared bald-headed ex-doctor comedian described it as an "all-singing, all-dancing, all-mickey-taking spectacular", and revealed that it will feature "a singing hunchback, a talking dog and a man in an iron lung". It was previously reported that the musical would be titled ‘X Factor: It’s Time To Face The Musical’ but in a joint statement Hill and Steve Brown, who has written for Spitting Image and TV Burp said: "We’d been umm-ing and ahh-ing about the title for a while. Then it hit us: 'I Can’t Sing!' It also happens to be the title of one of the funniest songs in the show and we hope hints at the direction we’re taking this production." The pair also stated Cowell is "backing it 4,500 per cent", and has described it as "one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen".

In March, Hill told the Daily Mail: "In our show, [Walsh] has basically dozed off; he's an octogenarian boy-band manager." The script is also said to include Cowell as a character, and wills set about explaining the unusual height of his trousers – something that has been puzzling the nation for nearly a decade now.

Khloe Kardashian Axed As X-Factor Host: Her Worst Moments [Videos]

Khloe Kardashian The X Factor USA Mario Lopez Simon Cowell Britney Spears

Well, that's it for Khloe Kardashian and The X-Factor. The Dark Lord himself Simon Cowell has decided that the reality star simply doesn't have what it takes to present live television and, as such, has given her the boot for season three. To make her feel worse, her co-host Mario Lopez has been welcomed back with open arms for the new season.

Kardashian came in for mockery during her hosting of the show, often being asked to read a teleprompter, which simply didn't work. As TMZ.com put it, it was a "total deer-in-the-headlights" experience watching her struggle through the shows." Fox didn't give a reason for axing Khloe, though said in a statement, "We really enjoyed working with her and wish her all the best in her future endeavors."

It's a rare setback for the Kardashian family, who are often used to getting things their own way in the world of U.S. television. However, it appears Khloe's decision to go down the live television route was badly advised. Lopez on the other hand took to the X-Factor like a duck to water, though he has plenty of experience from his time on Extra.

A New Direction? Is Harry Styles Planning A Secret Solo Album?

Harry Styles One Direction Simon Cowell

One Direction representatives have been forced to deny that Harry Styles is preparing for life away from the band after reports over the weekend suggested the teen heartthrob had been working on solo material in the studio. The Brit boy-band star has reportedly written several of his own tunes and has laid numerous tracks down with an unknown producer.

A pal told the Daily Mirror, "He loves messing around with some of the new songs he's been working on. He's bounced some ideas off his friend Ed Sheeran and has already laid down some vocals." The pop pair are known to be close friends and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that Sheeran has written material for his camera-friendly buddy. However, a One Direction representative had an explanation for the whole thing, saying, "The boys are all working on the new 1D album together and sometimes sessions are recorded separately."

Styles' pal appeared convinced that the 19-year-old was in the studio to work on his own stuff. "Harry's priority is obviously still with 1D. But when he decides the time to go solo has arrived, he's likely to have a project raring to go," they added.

X Factor - It's Time To Face The Musical! Gets The £6m Go Ahead

Simon Cowell The X Factor Louis Walsh Cheryl Cole

With Harry Hill at the helm of the script for The X Factor musical, it could have been a truly terrible concept if it weren't for his injection of intelligent comedy. Expeced to be a mocking parody of the show and its most iconic characters, Hill described the desired approach to the show as "at times scathing, without being cynical."

The story is about an 18 year old girl called Chenice who is completely oblivious to the X Factor due to her Grandfather's iron lung which blocks ITV's signals... that's as much as we know. However, one can assume that she stumbles into an audition, is either incredible or terrible and an adventure ensues. Sound about right?

Managing director of Stage Entertainment UK, who are co-producing the play, Rebecca Quigley, said that it's going to be "quite a wacky big show." It will feature 19 new songs and recognizable personalities from the well loved series, including Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell, plus "others you might recognise, but who have different names."

He's a legend. He's a great songwriter, he has massive influence on music today and he's 100 per cent credible. I'm a fan. Not just of his music but of him, the man. He's cool. Most of us aren't. Bowie is."

Strong endorsement indeed, and Bowie will have found more coming from the assorted critics who’ve heard The Next Day thus far. “It is an enormous pleasure to report that the new David Bowie album is an absolute wonder” writes the Daily Telegraph, before adding that its “urgent, sharp-edged, bold, beautiful and baffling, an intellectually stimulating, emotionally charged, musically jagged, electric bolt through his own mythos and the mixed-up, celebrity-obsessed, war-torn world of the 21st century.” The Guardian comments “Listening to The Next Day makes you hope it's not a one-off, that his return continues apace: no mean feat, given that listening to a new album by most of his peers makes you wish they'd stick to playing the greatest hits.” The Independent meanwhile simply comments “David Bowie’s The Next Day may be the greatest comeback album ever.” Heady stuff.

Britney Spears Jumps From The X-Factor Ship Before She's Made To Walk The Plank

Britney Spears Simon Cowell

In the spirit of dignity, something that her actions over the past few years have lacked, Britney Spears quit The X-Factor amidst rumours that show-boss Simon Cowell was ready to wield his unyielding celebrity axe all over her neck.

Her $15million contract appeared to be in jeopardy after fans decided her slightly vacant style was boring, and when the rumours of her imminent sacking become too strong to ignore, Britney decided to quit. A source close to production explained to The Daily Mail: "Britney and her team knew it was unlikely she'd be asked back as a judge. The producers have already been making other plans for next season over the holidays. The reality is that toward the end of last season the main players knew they wanted to replace both Britney and LA Reid. LA Reid wasn't at the top of his game in second season and he knew that."

Another of Britney's criticisms was her frequent break taking, which occurred every few contestants, according to another source. "Most people didn't expect Britney to make it through the season as it's a demanding role but she did her best," explained the insider. It turns out, being an X-Factor judge isn't just turning up in your second dress. Who knew? Fellow judge L.A. Reid  - a long-standing judge - already announced his departure to focus on his record label.

Simon Cowell And Ex-Fiancee Mezhgan Hussainy Get Cozy Over The Break

Simon Cowell Carmen Electra Mezhgan Hussainy

What is going on with Simon Cowell’s ever-so-complicated love life?

The music mogul, who has reportedly been dating actress Carmen Electra since her guest appearance on Britain’s Got Talent, but it looks like that relationship may have gotten a bit rocky. The pair did not spend New Years Eve together (a sure sign of trouble in Celebrityland, just look at Justin and Selena), and Simon has been seen recently enjoying the company of his ex-fiancée, Mezhgan Hussainy.

On Thursday, January 3, pictures surfaced of the two, lounging about in the sun and clearly enjoying each other’s company. Cowell was getting away from the gloom and rain back home on his annual trip to St. Barts and Hussainy joined him for a little R&R on his yacht. The pair looked quite comfortable with each other, but considering their dramatic split last year, it is probably too early to jump to any conclusions. A bit of backstory on the couple: the two got engaged in 2010 and broke it off in 2012. However, Cowell is known to stay friends with his ex-girlfriends and even reportedly bought Hussainy a mansion to apologize for the broken engagement. Well, wouldn’t we all want a friend like that? Or a little more than a friend, if these latest shots are anything to go by.

Will Kate Moss Be Appearing On The X Factor? Simon Wants Her On Board

Kate Moss Simon Cowell

The nation continues to sigh and groan under the weight of the hoards of manufactured musicians and bands with thanks to shows such as the X Factor, which means many people criticise the latest 'pop music', deeming it vacuous and interested more in looks than talent. Well, judging by Simon Cowell's latest dream employee- supermodel, not singer, Kate Moss- those critics are all right.

According to a source speaking to the Mirror, Simon is looking at ways of refreshing the show and one idea he will bring to the table is getting Kate Moss on board... "He knows how important the styling of the contestants is and having a supermodel and a world-famous name on board would certainly raise the bar." Apparently, if the rumours are correct and if she agrees, ""Kate could give the contestants advice and ideas on how they want to look and also how to look after themselves and still look great in the years ahead." Sounds riveting.

Both American and UK version of the X Factor have dropped ratings during the past year and consequently its creator, Simon Cowell, understandably wants to change the whole show up a bit. Both Gary Barlow and Tulisa Contostavlos' jobs are in contention for the can, to be replaced by fresher judges. Apparently, Nicole Scherzinger's contract is safe, having done so well this season getting both first and second place in the end with James Arthur and Jahmene Douglas.

Dannii Minogue Swaps Music For Modelling As Judge On Next Top Model

Dannii Minogue has decided on a more appropriate career venture as a judge on the next series of 'Britain & Ireland's Next Top Model' and has declined a return to 'The X Factor'.

The former singer judged on the singing talent show between 2007 and 2010 but, according to a friend of hers in The Mirror, 'She doesn't want the hassle and the rows that come with doing 'The X Factor'.' Music mogul Simon Cowell asked her last year if she would make a return, attempting to group together some of the former judges of the show possibly in a bid to up the program's quickly falling ratings. However, Dannii, who has her own fashion label Project D, is more interested in the world of fashion these days and has instead signed a deal with Sky Living show 'Britain & Ireland's Next Top Model'. 'I am brushing up on my model moves and with my highest platform heels on, I am excited to come face to face with (well maybe look up to) the glamazons of BINTM 2013', she told The Mirror. 'Next Top Model has always been a part of my essential TV viewing and I am so excited to be back in the UK for Britain & Ireland's Next Top Model's ninth series.' She admits that she loves mentoring but is particularly excited to join the modelling competition's judging panel because she is a huge fan of executive producer and co-judge Elle Macpherson. 'I remember Elle's first magazine cover in Australia and I have been a fan of hers since then', she said.

The star is set to join Elle and actor Tyson Beckford in February 2013 when filming begins with the show being aired later in the summer. Elle is equally as excited to have Dannii join them, admitting: 'I am really enthusiastic about working with Dannii. I have watched her blossom into a powerhouse in fashion and television and believe she will bring a fresh energy to the show - plus she's gorgeous.'
