Shia LaBeouf's representative has confirmed the actor is battling alcoholism and "receiving treatment" but is not in rehab.
We suspected what might be behind Shia LaBeouf's bizarre behaviour in New York last week and now his representative has confirmed the 28-year-old actor is battling alcoholism. However, contrary to reports, the Transformers actor has not checked into a rehabilitation facility.

LaBeouf's representative Melissa Kates, speaking to ABC, confirmed the actor was seeking treatment. Kates said, "Contrary to previous erroneous reports, Shia LaBeouf has not checked into a rehabilitation facility but he is voluntarily receiving treatment for alcohol addiction."

LaBeouf made headlines last week after he was arrested in New York on Thursday (26th June). The actor was escorted out of a Broadway production of Cabaret after reportedly smoking and shouting throughout the first act. Police were waiting outside the Studio 52 Theatre to escort him to the nearest police station. He was less than cooperative and was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespass.
Kates alluded to last week's incident, adding her client "understands that these recent actions are a symptom of a larger health problem and he has taken the first of many necessary steps towards recovery." LaBeouf appears to be considering Alcoholics Anonymous as photographers snapped him on Wednesday (2nd July) leaving an AA class in Los Angeles.

Last week's incident was not the first time LaBeouf had been involved with the authorities. A series of arrests go back to 2005 when LaBeouf was arrested for threatening his neighbour. The arrests have become more serious and frequent but LaBeouf's bizarre behaviour appears to have cumulated this year. Firstly with his stunt at the Berlin Film Festival in February when LaBeouf appeared wearing a paper bag with "I'm not famous anymore" written across it and, finally with his arrest in New York.
So what's next for the former Disney star? According to CNN, LaBeouf is to appear in court on 24th July on the charges from 26th June. Later this year, he will presumably be obliged to do the rounds publicising his latest film, Fury. Fury, due to be released in October 24th (UK) and November 14th (USA), stars LaBeouf and Brad Pitt as US soldiers as they engage in the final push against Germany in 1945.
