Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley, the star of Divergent who plays Edward Snowden's girlfriend in Oliver Stone's forthcoming biopic, has called the controversial whistle-blower a "hero". The 23-year-old actress shares Stone's reverential views on the former NSA contractor and told E!'s Marc Malkin that she respects Snowden for his integrity.

"I define a hero as somebody, who against the judgment of other people, if they believe something will positively impact the world and they choose to do it and honor their integrity, that's what I sort of consider a hero, no matter how big or small a feat they create," she said.

White Bird In A Blizzard Review

Very Good

There's an unusual honesty to this film, which is an odyssey into the inner life of a teen girl. Gregg Araki has made a career out of understanding the often tortured inner workings of the adolescent mind, and this is one of his most beautifully crafted films yet, artfully circling around a central mystery while digging deeply into each of the characters. And while it seems a bit straightforward for an Araki movie, it's packed with his usual darker corners, especially in the surprising final act.

It's set in the autumn of 1988, when Kat (Shailene Woodley) feels her life fall apart. She's just 17, on the verge of womanhood when her mother (Eva Green) inexplicably vanishes, leaving her dad (Christopher Meloni) struggling to help her through puberty. Her best pals (Mark Indelicato and Gabourey Sidibe) are some help, but at the same time she begins to feel a growing distance from her boyfriend Phil (Shiloh Fernandez). Is all of this connected, or is this because of Phil's own family issues? As she plays through the various clues in her mind, the answers are also eluding the local tough-guy detective (Thomas Jane). A few years later, Kat returns home from her studies at Berkeley to visit her dad. And maybe this time she'll finally find out what happened.

The film is a beautiful depiction of the awkwardness of being a teenager, when everything seems wrong but feelings are so strong. Araki fills the screen with sumptuous imagery including dreamy sequences set in a snowy landscape where Kat mentally searches for her mother. And flashbacks offer more earthy glimpses into this difficult mother-daughter relationship, especially as Kat and her once-glamorous mother begin to shift in their roles. Clearly, Kat suspects that her mother ran away after seducing Phil, but the truth isn't quite this obvious.

Win Divergent On DVD With The Soundtrack

To celebrate the release of Divergent on digital download, DVD and Blu-ray we are giving you the opportunity to win a copy of the DVD and the amazing soundtrack featuring the work of Ellie Goulding

Win Divergent On DVD With The Soundtrack

The hit action flick Divergent hit cinemas with a bang earlier this year. Adapted from the popular trilogy of novels by Veronica Roth and set within a dystopian, post apocalyptic Chicago with a population divided into distinct factions based on their human virtues, it was only a matter of time until words were transformed into a slick, action packed big screen adaptation.

The young and talented Shailene Woodley was the actress carefully selected to tell the thrilling story of Tris Prior who learns that she is Divergent and therefore will never be able to fit into any of these factions whilst quickly learning that there is a sinister plot brewing in her seemingly perfect society.

The Fault In Our Stars Review

OK

Based on the beloved novel by John Green, this film is so squarely slanted toward teen girls that it is likely to annoy everyone else. Written and directed in a way that never allows even a hint of ambiguity, each scene and line of dialogue is on-the-nose, pushing the audience to a specific emotional response. This of course leaves everything feeling manipulative and false. Even so, the movie is rescued by another wonderfully layered performance from Shailene Woodley.

She plays the 17-year-old Hazel, who has been dealing with aggressive cancer for three years and has only just been stabilised by a breakthrough treatment. As she still needs to carry oxygen to breathe properly, her parents (Laura Dern and Sam Trammell) are understandably protective, but she's happy to get out on her own whenever possible. Then in a support group she meets 18-year-old cancer survivor Gus (Ansel Elgort), who is immediately smitten with her and flirts so aggressively that she finally agrees to be his friend, but nothing more. As she hangs out with Gus and his pal Isaac (Nat Wolff), another cancer patient, she begins to open up to her innermost dreams. So she goes along with a make-a-wish plan to travel to Amsterdam with Gus and her mother to meet the author (Willem Dafoe) of her favourite novel. And the trip changes her life in several unexpected ways.

Sensitive audience members will be sobbing from the beginning to the end of this film, simply because director Josh Boone tells them to. More cynical viewers will find it impossible to believe anything on-screen. This isn't because the plot is bad (it's actually quite thoughtful and provocative) or the actors get their performances wrong. It's because Boone and the screenwriters can't resist punching every note as loudly as they can. It's been so tidily shaped into a cinematic structure that everything feels fake, which makes it impossible for the actors to create characters who could exist anywhere besides in a movie.

Battle Of The Tear-Jerkers: Will 'If I Stay' Prove As Popular As 'The Fault In Our Stars'?

Chloe Moretz Shailene Woodley

In its opening weekend Shailene Woodley’s new film The Fault in our Stars has taken over $48 million. Directed by Josh Boone and starring Woodley and Willem Defoe, the book is based on the young adult novel of the same name. Centred around Hazel, a 16-year-old cancer patient, played by Woodley, and the relationship she forms with 17-year-old Augustus Waters, an amputee and ex-basketball player, the film is widely considered to be the winner of tear-jerker of the year.

If I Stay The Fault In Our Stars Shailene Woodley has been highly praised for her performance as Hazel in The Fault in our Stars

Woodley has been praised for her performance while the film on the whole has won over the critics. Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers wrote in his review of the film: “It’s a fresh, lively love story, brimming with humor and heartbreak, and lived to the heights by Shailene Woodley, a sublime actress with a resume that pretty much proves she’s incapable of making a false move on camera.”

'The Fault In Our Stars' Takes $48 Million To Sink 'Edge Of Tomorrow'

Shailene Woodley Tom Cruise

The slow-burning publicity campaign for Fault in Our Stars worked perfectly. The teen-romance had started pulling in reviews about a year ago, but it finally got its full U.S release on Friday (June 6, 2014) and pulled in $48 million. Tom Cruise's well-received blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow could only manage $29.1 million.

Fault in Our Stars'The Fault in Our Stars' Dominated the Box-Office

The Shailene Woodley starring movie is based on John Green's novel of the same name, which has to date sold over 10 million copies. It tells the story of two cancer-stricken teens falling in love. 20th Century Fox pulled off a perfect marketing strategy that focused heavily on social media outreach.
