Although she announced she’s taking a significant career break last month, cancelling her world tour and ducking out of the limelight completely, Selena Gomez has become the first celebrity to gain 100 million Instagram followers.

This is partly as a result of Gomez’s fans – collectively known as Selenators – launching a campaign to get the 24 year old star past the historic social media landmark in her absence, and despite the fact that she hasn’t uploaded any new images in over a month.

At the end of August, Gomez revealed that she would be taking time out to deal with depression and anxiety caused by her struggle with the debilitating auto-immune disease, lupus.

She then cancelled the remainder of live dates on her current Revival tour. In a statement to People magazine at the time, she said that she had decided to take time away from the pressures of the spotlight “to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off.”

As such, the last image she posted before her social media holiday was six weeks ago, and seems to have some kind of symbolic resonance as it’s a moody shot of her lying still on the stage while performing.

Gomez was already the most followed Instagram celeb at that point, but now she’s quite a long way ahead of fellow social media titans Taylor Swift (91.4 million), Beyonce (85.3 million), Ariana Grande (85 million) and Kim Kardashian West (83.6 million).

A spokesperson from Instagram confirmed later on Wednesday (September 28th) that Gomez was indeed the only person to have followers in the twelve digits.
