It may not be among his Platinum selling singles, but Sam Smith is keen to express his attachment to his moving first single. He has re-recorded a rendition of 'Lay Me Down' with John Legend as the official single for Comic Relief, with all proceeds from the sales going to the charity campaign.

Smith performed the original single live at the 2015 Brit Awards too, where he also bagged two accolades for British Breakthrough Act and BRIT's Global Success Award. Earlier this year, he also unveiled a new video for the song, which got tears flowing as it featured a same-sex wedding and a funeral; it's clearly a subject close to his heart.

''Lay Me Down' holds a very special place in my heart', he admitted to BBC News. 'Not only did I perform it at the Brits, I'm now going to perform it live on the Red Nose Day show with the extremely talented John Legend.' He went on to express his solidarity for the campaign as it supports a project neat his home which works to help young people in the LGBT community. '"I'm extremely proud that my single will help raise money for projects like this and many others in the UK and across Africa', he added.

It seems Grammy winning Smith, who released his chart-topping debut album 'In the Lonely Hour' last year (making chart history when it became the first to top UK charts with the inclusion of streams), and John Legend, who won an Academy Award for his song 'Selma' soundtrack song 'Glory' with Common, have been planning on collaborating for some time. 'Sam is such a talented artist', he said. 'We've been looking forward to working together for a while now. I'm so glad we could collaborate on such a great song and for such a great cause.'
