The 49-year-old Bollywood star was found guilty on Wednesday (06May15) of eight charges, including rash and negligent driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder, for killing a homeless man and injuring four others while driving drunk in Mumbai, India in 2002.

He was taken into custody after being handed a five-year jail term but hours after the ruling, his lawyers applied for bail at the Bombay High Court in the city, citing a delay with the official documents.

His defence team has applied for a copy of the judgement so they can lodge an appeal, but one section of the paperwork will not be available until Friday (08May15), so the court has granted Khan two days interim bail.

He is allowed to go home and is protected from arrest until Friday, when he must return to court.

Singh's lawyer Harish Salve told the court, "(We) cannot put someone in jail without the order. Please give time 'til (the) day after (tomorrow). We have only received the operative part of the order."

It has also emerged that Khan's former chauffeur, Ashok Singh, is now facing a possible perjury charge after he gave evidence in the trial and claimed he was behind the wheel at the time of the fatal crash.

Prosecutor Pradeep Dhar said, "The court has said that Ashok's statement before the court is completely wrong and cannot be accepted."
