McGowan recently decided to quit acting and pursue a career as a director because she was sick of superhero movies.
Actress-turned-director Rose McGowan has said that she’s become disillusioned with the industry and has decided to quit acting because of the “boring” current trend for superhero movies.
The former ‘Charmed’ star made headlines earlier in 2015 when she slammed a casting call made for an Adam Sandler movie because of sexism. The 42 year old year old has now taken to Instagram this week to bemoan the current state of Hollywood and its reliance on what she sees as “green goblins and tight outfits”.
“Thoughts on the current state of tent pole films aka superheroes. I’d like to petition for other stories to be added to the slate,” wrote McGowan. “Where are the human stories? I don’t want green goblins and tight outfits. I want intelligence, daring work that drives society forward. I want a mirror, not every cliché regurgitated ad nauseum.”
McGowan recently embarked on a career behind the camera, and released a critically acclaimed short movie Dawn at the Sundance Film Festival. She said that she sincerely hopes that a new wave of female filmmakers would break into Hollywood and start getting major movie projects.

“From Scarface, to [The Big] Lebowski, to M, to Anchorman, to the sublime Carol, to Chinatown, to Sullivan’s Travels. Let’s bring complexity back. Let’s be the badasses we used to be. Open up the director’s chair and it’ll change. Think of all the stories not on screen because women are blocked by the status quo. Fuck the status quo. Honestly, it got so boring in front of the camera I had to quit. Boring often times egomaniacal tyrants not making art. Hmmm… Why ever should that change? Add women. Change the conversation. Promote depth.”
McGowan has been spotted out and about in Los Angeles this week sporting a new shaved-head haircut. This was because she has recently shot the music video for her debut single, ‘RM486’, from an as-yet-untitled wider project.
Back in June, she attacked Adam Sandler’s movies because of a casting call that requested female acting candidates to show off their cleavage by wearing push-up bras.
