De Niro felt that the time was right for a movie about a comic. "I thought it was such a great idea to do a comedian," he says. "That has never really been done before. Maybe The Entertainer [the 1960 drama starring Laurence Olivier]. But not like this. And a comedian can do things that are more outrageous, even if it's not my personal taste. That was my attraction."

He also relished the challenge of learning to actually do a stand-up comedy routine. "It's hard," he admits. "You have to have the right material. I worked on this material, but it wasn't like I worked on it for years and had it all there. I don't know how to deal with a heckler. That takes a lot of experience! I did OK, but you just have to get through it. Even though my audience was extras, you can feel like you're dying out there if they don't laugh. You want a reaction."

Jodie Foster has revealed that she was too scared of her co-star Anthony Hopkins to speak to him on the Silence Of The Lambs set. Appearing on ‘The Graham Norton Show’, Foster said that after seeing Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter during the first day read through, the actor had scared her so much that she didn't want to talk to him again.

Robert De Niro has once again re-stated his reasons for including a controversial anti-vaccination movie on the schedule for his Tribeca Film Festival this year – even though he has already taken the decision to remove it from the bill following an online outcry.

The 72 year old actor, whose 18 year old son suffers from autism, appeared on the ‘Today’ show on NBC on Wednesday (April 13th) to re-state his belief that Vaxxed, a documentary about the widely discredited medical theory linking childhood vaccinations to autism, should have been shown at the annual film festival he curates.

The 15th year of Tribeca Film Festival is coming to New York with no less than 77 movie premieres and a total of 101 films altogether. Co-founder Robert De Niro will also be celebrating the 40th anniversary of his iconic film 'Taxi Driver' with a special screening co-hosted by Martin Scorsese and Jodie Foster.

A controversial film about vaccination has been removed from the bill at Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Film Festival this year, after the actor found “concerns with certain things in this film” having taken advice from the scientific community.

As the co-founder of the NY film festival and as the father of an autistic child, the legendary actor had found himself in a quandary as to how to proceed with the documentary movie Vaxxed: from Cover-Up to Catastrophe. He had at first defended his decision to screen the film, but has now reversed his position having sought advice from experts.

Repeated studies have discredited the persistent theory that there’s a link between childhood vaccinations and autism, but a small and vocal minority of activists has for years sought to uncover a conspiracy in the medical profession.

The ongoing lawsuit, filed by Paula Petrella, daughter of deceased screenwriter Frank Petrella, was granted another shot at fighting the film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc over the 1980 Martin Scorsese-directed movie, 'Raging Bull', which she alleges unlawfully infringed upon the copyright of her father's screenplay, written in 1963.

Soon they are receiving offers to return to the ring and settle their feud once and for all, but they can only make it into the ring if they can actually regain their fitness in time for the big fight.

Apparently Robert De Niro is getting nostalgic for the good ol’ days, as the actor recently mentioned that he’d love to do a sequel to his 1976 classic Taxi Driver. De Niro said to The Guardian that he would like to see where his character Travis Bickle would end up after after all these years.

De Niro would love to revisit his cult character.

The original was directed by Martin Scorsese and spawned persistent rumors of a sequel over the years. De Niro even said that Scorsese and writer Paul Shrader got together to work out a possible script, but the idea never actually came into being. Nevertheless, De Niro would love to revisit Travis.

Robert De Niro has been hired to replace James Gandolfini in a new HBO mini-series Criminal Justice, following the death of The Sopranos star in June. De Niro will play a New York lawyer in the show, which Gandolfini had been developing based on the 2008 BBC series by Peter Moffat.

Following the actor's sudden death in Rome, it initially appeared as though HBO had put the project on the backburner, though, according to Deadline.com, the team were keen to continue in Gandolfini's honor. 

Deadline Hollywood's TV Editor Nellie Andreeva said the network wanted "a great actor whom Gandolfini would have wanted for the role and who would honour Gandolfini's memory with his performance," adding, "I hear their list consisted of one name only, Robert De Niro, who responded and came on board."

Robert De Niro has been appointed as the lead actor in the upcoming HBO mini-series Criminal Justice, a seven-episode stretch that the late James Gandolfini was initially slated to star in. The passing of Gandolfini had left the project in limbo, however with the appointment of De Niro the show will continue to air as planned.

HBO confrimed De Niro's appointment to The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday, 25 September, adding that Gandolfini will be given a posthumous executive producer credit on the show. The mini-series is an American adaption of the hit 2008 BBC series of the same name, which was the brainchild Peter Moffat and starred Ben Whishaw and the late Pete Postlethwaite. The HBO version, which is being made in association association with BBC Worldwide Production, of the show will be initially directed by Steven Zaillian, with others stepping in as the series progresses. Moffat will serve as an executive producer on the HBO series.

‘Criminal Justice’ HBO will be continuing with plans to make a seven-part miniseries called ‘Criminal Justice’ that was originally meant to star the late actor James Gandolfini.

In late June of this year (2013) the 51 year, James Gandolfini, unfortunately passed away while on vacations with his son in Italy. Ever since then the show was thought to be completely disbanded but academy award-winning actor Robert De Niro has reportedly stepped in to take over the role with HBO remaining Gandolfini as an executive producer posthumously, according to Deadline.

‘Criminal Justice’ is based on Peter Moffat’s 2008 BBC series of the same name and is written by Richard Price. The first episode will be directed by Steven Zaillian, who has been closely attached to the project for the last four years.

One of the festival's most talked-about films was Don Jon, the writing-directing debut of actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays a womanising gym-obsessive who meets his match in the feisty Scarlett Johansson. Both actors were on hand for the film's gala New York premiere this week. Woody Allen is to be awarded the Golden Globes' Cecil B. De Mille Award at next years awards show, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced on Friday, 13 September. The prolific writer, director, producer and actor will be bestowed with the award at the 71st Annual Golden Globes ceremony taking place on 12 January 2014.

Allen has been working in film for six decades

“There is no one more worthy of this award than Woody Allen,” HFPA president Theo Kingma said in the official announcement. He added, “His contributions to filmmaking have been phenomenal and he is an international treasure.”

The Family sounds great on paper – a Luc Besson film, set in France, starring Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeifer, Tommy Lee Jones and Diana Argon – it would take a… the opposite of a miracle for this film to flop. However, the critics just don’t seem to be warming up to this comedy about the family of an American mobster, relocating to rural France and essentially harassing the locals for almost two hours. There are a number of reasons, cited against the family – the acting not being one of them, of course – but the one that seems to be sticking is the uninspired story (penned by Besson himself, along with Michael Caleo, based on the novel by Tonino Benacquista).

De Niro manages to shine even in a lackluster role.

De Niro has plenty of experience playing mobsters. His performance as Gio, a gangster-turned-rat, who is forced to pose as a writer, living with his family in a village in Normandy and simultaneously penning a memoir, gets almost universal thumbs up, The New York Times’ Stephen Holden calls De Niro’s performance “surprisingly nuanced” and his character – “charming in a rough-hewed way, but lethal.”

After more than twelve years, Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro will rekindle the on-screen partnership in The Good House, the Ann Leary novel that has its right recently acquired by FilmNation, Deadline report. Michael Cunningham is set to adapt the book.

Streep will play Hildy Good, a successful real-estate broker who lives in a small town on Boston’s North Shore. She’s also a raging alcoholic – her parents held an intervention for her a year before the book begins. Good tries to reform an old relationship with Frank Getchell, a straight-talking Yankee who attempts to straighten out her life. "It is undeniable the chemistry Meryl and Bob will offer us as they bring these characters to life," says Karen Lunder, executive vice president of production for FilmNation.

Well, this has come from leftfield. After leaving Disney in 2005 to set up The Weinstein Company, the most powerful man in Hollywood is re-teaming with his old employer for an intriguing little animation.

Harvey Weinstein has announced he is developing an adaptation of Artemis Fowl for the big-screen with Disney.

"If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy," said Weinstein in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, "I feel as though everything is coming full circle considering Bob De Niro and Jane Rosenthal brought me this book while I was still at Miramax and within hours I told them I wanted the rights to the film."

The trailer for Ridley Scott's upcoming gritty thriller The Counselor dropped yesterday, after the initial teaser was circulated in cryptic Russian. With a November release date, there's certainly enough time to build up anticipation for the film, which is written by No Country For Old Men screenwriter, Cormac McCarthy.

There may be added logic to the late-2013 release date however: to give itself the best chances for 2014 Oscars consideration. The Counselor stars Michael Fassbender (Shame, Prometheus) who plays a lawyer who gets involved in cocaine trafficking and ends up in over his head with the wrong people. According to First Showing, Fassbender teams up in business with a rich acquaintance, played by Bardem, as Pitt's shady criminal character comes out of the shadows as things take a turn for the worst.In an incredible cast, Fassbender's co-stars include Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz and Cameron Diaz.Despite their cinematic fame and success, neither Scott nor Pitt have ever won an Oscar before, with Pitt apparently resigning himself to never winning, having said: "I don't play the Oscars game." November release dates tend to be awards friendly, due to being late enough to not be forgotten amongst the year's other cinematic releases but not too late as to have not made enough of an impression.

Tom Sizemore’s autobiography ‘By Some Miracle I Made It Out of There’ details the actor’s dramatic fall from grace. Known for his roles in movies such as Saving Private Ryan and Natural Born Killers, at one point, Sizemore had it all; a successful career, money and a restaurant he part-owned with Robert De Niro.

However, as with many a Hollywood star before him (and no doubt plenty to follow), drugs proved to be Tom Sizemore’s downfall and he lost everything. “I’d had the multimillion-dollar house, the Porsche, the restaurant I partially owned with Robert De Niro. And now I had absolutely nothing.” During his relationship with the former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss that Sizemore’s life really began to disintegrate. In 2003, he was convicted of “harassing, annoying and physically abusing Fleiss,” Salon.com reports. the actor admits to having become a “spoiled movie star” and an “arrogant fool” though he denies ever striking Heidi.

Salon describe the book as a hard-hitting one, written in “coarse prose befitting some of the hard-boiled characters Sizemore brought to life on screen.” The subject matter is not easy to take either, much of the time, with Tom’s tales of degradation taking up much of the pages – “sex tapes, copious amounts of drug taking” and other debauched activity that led to the star’s downfall. Summing up his approach to the autobiography, Tom writes “I’ve led an interesting life, but I can’t tell you what I’d give to be the guy you didn’t know anything about.”

The King of Comedy is thirty years old and to celebrate the momentous anniversary, the star of the mad-cap kidnap comedy Robert De Niro decided to air a special screening of the movie at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday (April 27). De Niro, who co-founded the film fest with Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff twelve years ago, attended the anniversary screening alongside the movie's director, Martin Scorsese and his co-star in the movie, the legendary Jerry Lewis.

The three reunited on stage at the Borough of Manhattan Community College before the screening to deliver a few preliminary laughs prior to the feature presentation, with De Niro admitting that he hasn't seen the film in "at least 25 years," saying after, "I'm very curious to see it. If I'm not too embarrassed, I'll stay here after."

Robert De Niro Has Every Reason To Smile After His Oscar Nomination For Silver Linings Playbook

Robert De Niro got the nod for Best Supporting Actor when the Oscar nominations for 2013 were announced by Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone in Los Angeles on Thursday morning (January 8, 2013). The Hollywood veteran received a shout for his turn in David O'Russell's drama-comedy Silver Linings Playbook, with lead star Bradley Cooper getting nominated for Best Actor.

Though Cooper will battle the frankly unbeatable Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln) and the respected Joaquin Phoenix (The Master) for Best Actor, De Niro could be onto a good thing in the supporting category. He plays the father of Pat Solitano (Cooper) a former school teacher who loses everything, his job, his house, his wife and is forced to live back with his parents (Mother played by Jacki Weaver, who also scored a nomination). Critic Robert Roten said, "The plot is clever and a bit unconventional. Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro all turn in wonderful performances in this very funny, very warm comedy."

John Travolta has been talking of some ideas for future projects at the opening of the Zurich Film Festival and they include a potential reunion with Face/Off director John Woo.

“I’m also considering doing a US film about the football coach Vince Lombardi, who coached my dad [Salvatore Travolta] before he went professional,” Travolta said. “I would play Vince Lombardi.” Legendary coach Lombardi is best known as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers during the 1960s when he led them to three straight league championships and the first two Super Bowls. The Super Bowl trophy is named in his honour. He’s also “entertaining the possibility of doing” a remake of the John Woo film The Killer. The 1989 action film - which starred Chow Yun Fat - is to be produced by Woo. It looks like despite Travolta’s age, his appetite for films isn’t letting up just yet. As well as big talk surrounding his future endevours, the action thriller Killing Season, in which he stars alongside Robert De Niro is in post production and set for a 2013 release. Set in the remote Smoky Mountain wilderness, the film sees two veterans of the Bosnian War, one American, one Serbian, come to blows.

It wasn’t long ago that the Pulp Fiction actor was ready to pack it in: "I lost my son a few years ago and I had been having quite a time of that and after three years getting a lot of support from my church and a lot of support from people, fans, family I decided that it was OK to go back to work because I'd even thought of retiring at one point because it felt like too much," he told BBC Breakfast.
