You can always count on the Met Ball to bring out some of the year’s craziest fashions.
Last night the world’s most famous and fashionable descended upon the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York for the annual Met Gala, a celebration of fashion that always delivers some seriously out-there looks. This year the Gala’s official theme was ‘China: Through The Looking Glass,’ but on the red carpet the nearly nude look ruled for some, while for others it was all about making an unforgettable fashion statement.
Rihanna in Guo Pei
First let’s look at Rihanna, the singer who literally stole the show last night. Dressed in an awe inspiring yellow Guo Pei gown, Rihanna had jaws dropping all along the Met’s red carpet. Lined with yellow fur and covered in embellishments Ri-Ri’s dress was an internet meme creator’s dream and it ended up being compared to everything from Big Bird to an omelette online.

Paying tribute to the evening’s theme in the most extravagant way possible Sarah Jessica Parker donned some seriously red hot headwear, made by Irish designer Phillip Treacy. To some SJP’s flaming headdress was ridiculous, but to others it was the perfect OTT accessory for New York’s most outlandish night out. For us it just looked heavy, still if there’s one person who could rock it, it’s certainly SJP.
FKA Twigs in Christopher Kane
British singer FKA Twigs might be a new name on the fashion scene, but she certainly chose the right night to make a style statement. The rumoured fiancee of Robert Pattinson wore a coloured silk dress by British designer Christopher Kane which featured cut outs of arms and legs wrapped around her body.
But there was something unusual about Twig’s dress, which had been specially customised for the singer. Hidden away, right above the dress’ split was a drawing of a tiny penis, just because, why not. If you had the chance to attend the most fashionable party of the year wouldn’t you want a sketch of a small penis hidden away on your couture gown?
Kim Kardashian in Roberto Cavalli
Of all the outfit choices at last night’s Gala the ‘nearly nude’ look was by far the most popular, thanks to Kim Kardashian, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez all indulging in gorgeous barely there gowns. Kim wore a sheer, white Roberto Cavalli creation adorned with feathers and crystals which she later said was inspired by Cher’s outfit at the inaugural Gala in 1971.

Jennifer Lopez chose a red off the shoulder Versace gown, which featured a jewelled dragon on the front, sheer side panels and a beautiful, flowing train. Arriving on the red carpet last, Beyonce had everybody talking when she stepped out in the most naked of all the naked dresses, a stunning sheer jewelled gown by Givenchy, which the singer rocked with a super high ponytail.
