Rihanna chose the moment that Bey's name was read out for Best Urban Contemporary Album to apply some lip gloss. Shade?
In amid the annual music industry bunfight that is the Grammy Awards last night, social media went wild after a few eagle-eyed viewers thought Rihanna shaded Beyonce as she lost out to her for Best Urban Contemporary Album award by disinterestedly applying lip gloss as Bey’s name was read out.
Surprising, as they’re both among the most loved female pop stars in the world at this moment in time and not normally associated with petty spats with other celebs.

However, as the announcer revealed the winner of the Best Urban Contemporary Album on Sunday night (February 12th) – for which Bey’s Lemonade and Ri-Ri’s Anti were both nominated – the Barbadian-born singer seemed to talk throughout and decided to re-touch her lip gloss as Bey won. Quite aside from the other antics she was indulging in that were spotted, such as swigging surreptitiously from a hip flask by the camera on a few occasions, this was something that was pounced upon by viewers on Twitter.
“Rihanna at Beyonce's #GRAMMYs win; ‘well I'm just gonna retouch my lipgloss’”, before another said: “Kinda of looked like @rihanna was a little bitter while @beyonce won, or did she really need to apply lipgloss at that exact moment??”

Others reacted slightly more positively to the incident. “Rihanna has the best reaction to losing a Grammy to Beyonce”, with another echoing the sentiment and trumpeting it as the evening’s highlight. “Rihanna applying Lipgloss as Beyoncé won is the best moment of the night.”

But Bey and Ri-Ri have never been known to have been in any rivalry before, and quickly afterwards the 28 year old star was seen blowing kisses at Bey. All probably nothing.
The 59th Grammy Awards were marred by controversy, as Adele scooped the Album of the Year award for her latest record 25 ahead of pregnant Bey’s Lemonade. Many identified this as a continuation of the Recording Academy’s trend of overlooking black artists for the main prizes.
