Ricky Gervais isn’t a third series kind of guy. ‘The Office’ wrapped up in two seasons followed by a 2-part Christmas special. ‘Extras’ was much the same. ‘Derek’, though, Gervais’ less critically acclaimed but equally popular effort, could be in line for a third outing.

"It's the first time I've ever considered doing a third series of something," said Gervais. "I think I certainly want to do the two series and a special for Derek and then see. I don't want to make TV for the sake of it. You have other ideas and also you don't want to outstay your welcome."

This has been a hot topic for Gervais recently, who decided to wheel out his most famous creation, David Brent, for Comic Relief last year. Since then, Brent has gone on tour with his ‘band’, Forgone Conclusion, and now talks of Glastonbury appearances and Office comebacks are rife.

And he’s recenty admitted that he’s ‘hooked’ on Brent. "I didn't want to keep Brent going because I wanted to do other things," he said. "But now I've done other things, it feels safe to revisit it. It's a joy - I got hooked again. I love it, particularly the songs. I'm a failed pop-star and I always sneak a song in,” he added.

The news that Gervais might venture into a third season of Derek comes ahead of the show’s season 2 premiere, which hits Channel 4 tonight (April 23) and is available to US residents on Netflix from May 30.
