Wilson was presenting the award for Best Supporting Actor at the 2016 BAFTAS when she made the remark.
Rebel Wilson provided one of the more controversial moments at this year’s BAFTAs by making jokes about the ongoing debate over the lack of diversity in the movie industry, and then shocking some viewers by mentioning that she was practicing her “transgender face”.
Taking to the stage to present the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor to Mark Rylance (for Bridge of Spies) at the Royal Opera House in London, the How To Be Single star took aim at the #OscarsSoWhite controversy in her own inimitable style.
“It's so great to be here at this really serious event,” the Australian actress said. “I have never been invited to the Oscars, because as you know they are racists, but the BAFTAs have diverse members and that's what we all want to see in life. Diverse members.”

That got a load of laughs, but what Wilson said next proved to be rather more divisive. Referring to Eddie Redmayne’s nomination for his portrayal of transgender pioneer Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl, she said: “One day I hope to return here to collect a BAFTA myself. I have already been practicing my transgender face.”

She also skirted rather close to the line with a reference to Beasts of No Nation star Idris Elba as “chocolate”. “Sorry, Idris, you’re making me a bit nervous. I’m just sociologically programmed to want chocolate on Valentine’s Day.”
Do you know that more than half of transpeople will attempt suicide at least once in their life, @RebelWilson? Did you know that?

Her comments had some in stitches, but much of Twitter was criticising the 35 year old actress for insensitivity towards transgender people. “Rebel Wilson has now displayed her ignorance publicly at two award shows. It's time we stop giving her a pass, yeah?” one commenter said, while another wrote “Rebel Wilson should spend more time improving her acting skills instead of joking about Trans ppl. Aren't actors supposed to be versatile?”
It’s not the first time she’s courted controversy at an awards show, with black activists criticising her for making jokes about police “injustice” with a T-shirt that read ‘F*** Tha Stripper Police’ at the MTV Video Awards last year.
