‘The View’ host was criticised on twitter for saying she’d discriminated against a job applicant with a ‘ghetto name’.
Raven-Symoné has come under fire on social media for comments she made during an episode of ‘The View’ on Thursday. During a segment on the talk show, the former Disney Channel star said she would discriminate against any job applicant with a “ghetto” name.
Raven-Symoné has encountered controversy after comments she made on ‘The View’.
During a discussion about a study released in the Journal of Evolution and Human Behaviour, the host said there were certain names she would discriminate against if she were an employer. “Just to bring it back, can we take back ‘racist’ and say ‘discriminatory,’ because I think that’s a better word,” she told her co-hosts.
“And I am very discriminatory against words like the ones that they were saying in the video. I’m not about to hire you if your name is Watermelondrea. It’s just not going to happen. I’m not going to hire you.”
“Is that mean?” she asked, as her co-hosts looked on shocked. On twitter many criticised Symoné for her views. “Raven is on TV looking like Toucan Sam w/ her technicolor dreamcoat hair but wants to talk about not hiring folks w/ ghetto names. Girl…,” wrote one user.
“Raven seems to see no irony in supporting discrimination against non-traditional names while having a non traditional name AND appearance,” correspondent Marc Lamont Hill commented on twitter. The host is yet to address the backlash.
But it’s not the first time Symoné has caused controversy. While appearing on Oprah Winfrey’s 'Where Are They Now'? programme in 2014, Symone encountered similar criticism after sating she considered herself American, not African-American. “Oh girl, you’re going to set Twitter on fire,” Winfrey told her at the time.
Speaking about the moment to Us Weekly in June Symoné said, “[Oprah] told me that black Twitter’s going to hate me forever. She was right. She’s like everybody’s rich aunt. She’s really close to you, but she’ll never give you any of her money.”
