The Prodigy Score No.1 Album With 'The Day Is My Enemy'

The Prodigy has scored their sixth No.1 album with The Day is My Enemy, knocking James Bay's well received record The Chaos and the Calm to number two. The Essex band pulled in mixed reviews for their latest effort though it outsold albums from Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran on its debut week.

The ProdigyThe Prodigy have landed their sixth new album, The Day Is My Enemy

The Day is My Enemy follows Music For The Jilted Generation (1994), The Fat of the Land ('97), Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned (2004), Their Law: The Singles 1990-2005 ('05), and Invaders Must Die ('09).

The Prodigy - The Day Is My Enemy Album Review

Now a quarter of a century into their career, The Prodigy are an act who genuinely need little introduction. This, 'The Day Is My Enemy', is their sixth album and will be promoted with European and UK tours, before a packed festival schedule taking in the likes of Isle Of Wight, T In The Park and Benicassim amongst many others.

The Prodigy - The Day Is My Enemy Album Review

When The Prodigy re-announced themselves with the vitriolic 'Nasty', it was the anger of the song which was the most impressive aspect of what was ultimately a disappointing return. Thankfully, the title track which opens the record hits the target with Liam Howlett providing the audio equivalent of an adrenalin shot. Tinged with electronica, the heavy beats are punishing in the best of ways and it is only bettered by 'Destroy', a frantic anthem which teases the sound of 'Breathe' during its intro. Another fine sensory assault comes in the shape of 'Wild Frontier', while 'Get Your Fight On' is a reminder of why this outfit have bridged the gap between dance and rock so successfully.

As much as 'The Day Is My Enemy' is a thumping example of the prowess of The Prodigy, it is by no means a classic to sit alongside their work of the nineties. The inconsistency which hindered 2009's 'Invaders Must Die' is, to an extent, present here. 'Ibiza' unfortunately finding Keith Flint sounding like The Streets' Mike Skinner while the lyric in 'Medicine' about "a spoon full of sugar" invariably leaves you thinking of Mary Poppins - perhaps the least threatening fictional character in history. It slightly derails an album of fury, which for the main, is channelled into relentless juggernauts, but there's no doubting this Essex trio remain a formidable force.

Sonisphere 2015 Cancelled

Prodigy Metallica Iron Maiden

Bad news for metal fans today: the UK edition of Sonisphere festival at Knebworth will not go ahead this year. Sonisphere’s organisers made the announcement on its official website late on Friday (January 16th).

One of the reasons given was that there had been a struggle to put together a “good enough” line-up, though The Prodigy, Metallica and Iron Maiden had all been announced as headliners for the July 4th-6th event. Furthermore, in the increasingly crowded festival fixture list, it’s been difficult to find a weekend that doesn’t clash with other events.

The best of BelgiumBelgium
- Pukkelpop (August 14th - 16th): This Belgian weekend remains seriously cool having first began in 1985 and always playing host to some of the world's best alternative music with early performers including Ramones, The Jesus And Mary Chain and Iggy Pop. Nearly 30 years on, Pukkelpop maintains its excellence with 2014 seeing the likes of Clean Bandit, Gogol Bordello and Die Antwoord on the bill.

Creamfields 2013 - Preview

It's only April but Contactmusic already have one eye on the summer. specifically towards Creamfields 2013 which will be taking place at its usual venue near Daresbury in Cheshire over the August Bank Holiday weekend (Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th August). And while much of the UK's music press will be off to Leeds and Reading, we're looking forward to something that bit more adrenaline-fuelled, weird and wonderful over at Creamfields.

Creamfields 2013 - Preview

Long since established as the UK's premier dance and electronic festival, Creamfields will be in full party spirit this year to celebrate its 15th Birthday, and the initial line-up is befitting such a milestone. Leading the charge for 2013's event are iconic dance pioneers The Prodigy headlining the Saturday night (24th August) with their only UK festival appearance of 2013. Still going strong and approaching their 25th anniversary, the band are still legendary for their incendiary festival appearances and we're expecting nothing less from their Creamfields headliner - true trailblazers! Supporting them on the North Stage that night will be French Wunderkind Madeon and Zane Lowe with DJ sets, while the South stage takes a distinctly more cutting-edge tack with Avicii, Knife Party and Nicky Romero. Steve Angelo and Benny Benassi head up the Size Matters tent, while Eric Prydz invites Marco Carola, Adam Beyer and special guest Maya Jane Coles to his Prydz Friends tent. Also heading up their own tents are Pete Tong and Annie Mac with impressive supporting casts, though personally, we're most excited about Above & Beyond's Anjunabeats stage: with Paul Oakenfold, Gareth Wyn and Gareth Emery giving us a night of exceptional Trance before Above & Beyond themselves come along to finish the whole thing off in glorious style.

Onto the Sunday (25th August) and the big name is undoubtedly David Guetta - arguably the biggest name in the world of electronic music right now - heading up the North Stage with a selection of tunes that have pretty much been resident on radios across the globe over the past few years. Though, he does face a little competition from Tiësto on the South Stage, as well as Groove Armada giving one of their ever-excellent and eclectic DJ sets in the Nation tent, and Sebastian Ingrosso proving that there is life after Swedish House Mafia as he fronts the All Mixed Up stage. Frankly, Sunday is full of mouth-watering clashes, with Richie Hawtin's intelligent Techno jacking the Enter stage around, Laidback Luke and Eddie Halliwell getting hands up in the air at the Super You&Me stage, Kutski, Andy Whitby and Alex Kidd pushing it hard and fast at the Goodgreef X-Tra Hard stage and Subfocus and Modestep bringing the bass tremors in the Speakerbox tent. And frankly, if you've got any energy left after that little lot, you're a stronger man than I am! An impressive line-up all round.
