Porno for Pyros (formed 1922 - disbanded 1998)
Porno for Pyros was an American alternative rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1992. Its members included Perry Farrell (singer), Stephen Perkins (drummer), Peter DiStefano (guitarist) and Martyn LeNoble (bassist). Their most popular tracks are 'Tahitian Moon' and 'Cursed Female'.
After releasing two studio albums, Porno for Pyros disbanded in 1998 after guitarist Peter DiStefano was diagnosed with cancer.
Formation: After the separation of the band Jane's Addiction, former members Perry Farrell (singer) and Stephen Perkins (drummer) united with Peter DiStefano (guitarist) and Martyn LeNoble (bassist) to create Porno for Pyros. Farrell chose the name after seeing an advert for fireworks is a pornographic magazine, however the name has also been associated with song lyrics to LA riots which took place during the band's formation.
Musical Career: The band started off by promoting themselves through going on a nationwide tour - contributing to the success of their self-titled debut album. Launched in 1993, the record peaked at number three on the US Billboard 200. Fans reactions varied dramatically, with some loving the LP and some disappointed. The band then went on another extensive tour, and later played at Woodstock 94. Live shows contrasted dramatically with those of Jane's Addicition: a wide range of pyrotechnics and special effects were commonly used.
After recording the majority of the bass tracks for the group's next album, bassist LeNoble quit Porno for Pyros and was replaced by Mike Watt (minutemen) who played bass for the rest of the LP tracks and toured with the band. The album featured guitarist Dave Navarro and bassist Flea. The new album, entitled Good God's Urge, came out in 1996 and reached number twenty on the US Billboard 200. Foreshadowing later attempts at a Jane's Addiction reunion, the band played the popular 'Mountain Song' by Jane's Addiction whilst on tour. No further touring took place when guitarist DiStefano was diagnosed with Cancer. According to the The Jane's Addiction/Porno for Pyros book Whores (by Brendan Mullen), a third album from the group was under construction but never recorded.
