Opera star Placido Domingo is recovering after he was diagnosed with infections to his bladder and respiratory tract.

The Spaniard has been suffering from the ailments for some time and was recently forced to cancel his final three performances of Il Trovatore at the Salzburg Festival in Austria.

However the acclaimed tenor is heading back to the U.S. to seek further treatment and is hoping for a full recovery in the weeks to come.

He acknowledged the outpouring of support from his concerned fans with a Facebook.com post on Monday (18Aug14), which read: "Thank you so much for all the concern regarding my health and my recent cancellations. I am on my way to Nyc for some rest and a medical check up. Then off to La for a new and exciting new edition of Operalia and rehearsals of La Traviata!"

Domingo is still set to preside over Los Angeles' annual Operalia competition later this month (Aug14) and appear in the starring role in La Traviata on 19 September (14) at the L.A. Opera, where he serves as the general director.
