In an ingenious scheme for charity that could probably solve the national debt crisis if applied to Britain’s finances, Piers Morgan has pledged to remain silent on social media for one whole day in order to raise money for Comic Relief.

The controversial ‘Good Morning Britain’ presenter and former newspaper editor, 51, will not post anything on Twitter or any other social media platform for 24 hours on Friday (March 24th) if donations reach £50,000 – and another rival celebrity was among the first to dig deep and donate toward the cause!

Lord Sugar, the star of ‘The Apprentice’, pledged £5,000 to the ‘Shut Piers Up’ campaign, describing it as the “bargain of the century” in a video message he posted to Twitter.

“It's going to be a wonderful day without that nutter clogging up Twitter with his nonsense for the whole day,” he said.

Indeed, shortly after the Red Nose Day campaign was announced, Twitter featured it as a ‘moment’ news story on the site. “I'm now a 'Twitter Moment' because @Lord_Sugar paid £5k to silence me on Twitter. I believe this is called 'irony',” Piers tweeted soon afterwards.

The outspoken presenter, who has gotten involved in social media spats with many celebrities – and, in the case of Ewan McGregor, somebody who was even supposed to appear on ‘GMB’ – and who supports Arsenal, also pledged to wear a Tottenham Hotspur shirt all day if donations reached the £50k mark.

‘Match of the Day’ presenter Gary Lineker promptly went in for £2,000, and other celebs in the shape of Robbie Savage, Gary Neville and Emma Freud added their support.

At the National Television Awards back in late January, Morgan appeared onstage to present a trophy with his ‘GMB’ co-presenter Susanna Reid while wearing a gag around his mouth.
