Doctor Who’ writer Mark Gatiss has revealed he’s open to the idea of the next Doctor being female with a male assistant. Currently Jenna Coleman stars as the Doctor’s assistant Clara Oswald, but the actress will be leaving the show before the end of this series, making room for the Timelord’s new companion.

Speaking after the Attitude Awards in London, Gatiss said, "It would be very interesting if the Doctor had a male companion... but then it would be a very male show.” The writer then went on to say that he would be "delighted" if in the future the Doctor is played by a woman.

We may be only three episodes into the new series of ‘Doctor Who’, but BBC bosses are reportedly already panicking over the drop in viewing figures. According to The Mirror, the dip in viewer numbers is causing the Beeb to consider scrapping next year’s series of ‘Doctor Who’ in favour of airing 'Sherlock' style ­feature-length ­special episodes.

Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor will be giving ‘Doctor Who’ viewers a fright soon, as he provides the scream for villain, the Fisher King. The metal singer is said to be a huge fan of the BBC show and was contacted by producers to lend his unique howl to the alien warlord.

Jenna Coleman has reportedly quit her role as Clara Oswald on ‘Doctor Who’, after scoring the lead in a new ITV drama about Queen Victoria. Coleman has played the Timelord’s companion Clara Oswald for three years on the BBC sci-fi series, becoming the longest-serving assistant in recent times.

According to The Mirror, Coleman will star as Queen Victoria in a £10million ITV drama and will leave ‘Doctor Who’ before this year’s Christmas special. A source told the newspaper. “Jenna clinched the role of Victoria a while ago but it’s been a very closely guarded secret.”

With the new series of ‘Doctor Who’ debuting on BBC One next Saturday, the current Timelord Peter Capaldi has been opening up about his experiences since he became the 12th Doctor. Speaking to The Telegraph, Capaldi admitted that he doesn’t think he’s quite ‘nailed’ the iconic character yet.

“I don’t feel I’ve nailed it yet – from an acting point of view, I mean,” Capaldi told the newspaper. “I don’t yet feel that I know how to do this. Quite who the Doctor is remains mysterious to me – which is of course as it should be – but one of the biggest challenges that I’ve found, and am finding, is that you have to sort of be able to spin on a penny.”

Peter Capaldi has revealed that he would like David Bowie and Keith Richards to make guest appearances on ‘Doctor Who’ one day.

Capaldi, who currently plays the timelord, made the comments during a special test screening in front of a select audience in Cardiff. They were shown the first two episodes of the forthcoming ninth series, which starts on Saturday September 19th.

With a host of high-profile names making cameo appearances in the recent past, he was asked who he’d like to see getting involved with the series. “David Bowie, he would be a very good one," he told the audience. He added he would also like to see Rolling Stones guitarist Richards “stumbling around the Tardis, knocking out a few chords.”

Alex Kingston will reprise her role as River Song in this year’s ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas special, the actress has confirmed. It will be the first time the character has met Peter Capaldi’s incarnation of the Doctor, after last being seen in season seven opposite Matt Smith.

Doctor Who’ showrunner Steven Moffat has joked he would easily beat Peter Capaldi in a test of ‘Doctor Who’ knowledge. Speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, Moffat said that although the current Doctor was very knowledgable about the BBC series, he was no match for the showrunner.

The 45 year old actor will appear alongside the current timelord Peter Capaldi and his assistant Jenna Coleman. Shearsmith gave a reaction to the news by saying: “I am absolutely thrilled to be filming ‘Doctor Who’ as Mark Gatiss has written a fantastic role for me in a very scary episode. It has been so exciting to be part of a very singular episode – which, I can say with authority will be unlike any previous episode of ‘Doctor Who’.”

Ben Stephenson, the outgoing controller of drama commissioning at the BBC, has said the licence fee needs to be increased, or the broadcaster will be forced to slash its drama output. In his farewell interview with the Radio Times, Stephenson, who helped bring shows such as ‘Sherlock’ and ‘Doctor Who’ to British screens, described the BBC as being at a "tipping point” thanks to the licence fee cap.

Currently the licence fee paid by British television owners is capped at 2010's price of £145.50 until 31 March 2017, but thanks to inflation Stephenson says the cap is effectively a cut to the BBC's budget. "It really can't keep cutting... And the truth is the market isn't going to fill the gap," he told the Radio Times.

The character was created by Michael Bond in 1958, a polite bear who loves marmalade sandwiches that is found at London’s Paddington Station and taken in by the Brown family.
