Ant-Man Gives Paul Rudd A New Genre To Play With

Paul Rudd

At 46, Paul Rudd has a terrific career in comedy, including raucous silliness (Anchorman 2), clever satire (They Came Together), rom-coms (Admission) and indie comedy-dramas (Prince Avalance) in the last two years alone. Now he's made the jump to the superhero blockbuster in Ant-Man.

Paul Rudd in Ant-ManPaul Rudd finally finds himself in the Marvel world

"I don't have an agenda where I do a comedy and say, 'I have to do a drama next,' or 'I am looking for an action movie now,'" he says. "The Marvel world wasn't anything I thought about seriously, because I guess I never imagined I'd get hired! What's different about it is that it's a character who's joining a universe that exists throughout several movies, and that's like nothing I've ever done."

Ant-Man Review

Excellent

The increasingly stale Marvel formula gets a blast of fresh air in this rollocking adventure movie, which combines a steady stream of character-based comedy with action sequences that are integrated seamlessly into the plot. Like last summer's Guardians of the Galaxy, the film departs from the usual tired structure to joyously tell a story that's more than pure escapism.

Released from prison after a stint for burglary, Scott (Paul Rudd) is struggling to restart his life when he has an unexpected encounter with Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), an inventor who needs his help. Hank's technology company is being steered away from his original vision to help mankind by his daughter Hope (Evangeline Lilly) and his protege Darren (Corey Stoll), who see a chance to make a lot of money by selling Hank's ideas to the highest bidder. Hank's biggest breakthrough is a suit that shrinks the wearer down to ant-size, allowing for all kinds of unexpected possibilities. Pushed into a corner, Scott starts learning how to master the suit. But his ex-wife (Judy Greer) is now engaged to a cop (Bobby Cannavale) who's keeping his eye on Scott.

One of director Peyton Reed's main challenges was to sell the whole idea of an insect-sized warrior, and he does that fairly effortlessly, revealing an increasingly cool series of possibilities in each action sequence. These set-pieces emerge organically from the story, combining comedy and exhilaratingly coherent action to push the narrative forward. One of the best moments is an encounter with one of the Avengers (Anthony Mackie's Falcon), which offers a strong hint about how Ant-Man can liven up the franchise as a whole. And the climactic sequence is an inspired collision of mind-bending effects and inventive humorous touches (Thomas the Tank Engine nearly steals the whole film). Plus two post-credit stings for the fanboys.

'It's A Dream Come True': Paul Rudd Marvels Over 'Ant-Man' Role

Paul Rudd Peyton Reed

Paul Rudd is set to make his superhero debut as the newest addition to the Marvel film franchise: 'Ant-Man'. And while it's a first for him to be taking on his first comic-book based role, he was facing something a little different to the previous Marvel films.

Paul Rudd in Ant-ManPaul Rudd says working on 'Ant-Man' was a lot of fun

Not only is 'Ant-Man' Paul Rudd's first Marvel adventure, but it's also the comic book character's first movie; though looking at how cool it looks, it's difficult to understand why he has been ignored until now. 'It feels really strange, and cool, to be part of the Marvel universe', says Rudd. 'But to put on that suit - which, by the way, I think is the coolest looking suit of all of them - it's impossible not to feel a little bit like a superhero.'

When you need someone to break into a place and steal something, a career cat burglar is your best bet. Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is in jail, which isn't the best start, but when Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) needs a thief, Lang is still his man. Pym was once a miniature superhero known as Ant-Man, yet when Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) takes over his company and tries to mass-market the powerful Ant-Man suits, Pym hires Lang to break in and steal the suit back. 'Ant-Man': Now We Know What Yellowjacket Looks Like

Paul Rudd Corey Stoll

So after the Ant-Man trailer that refused to show anything other than Paul Rudd and a bit of Michael Douglas, Marvel has now released a series of new pictures including some behind-the-scenes moments and a clearer look at Evangeline Lily's Hope Van Dyne and Corey Stoll's villain Darren Cross.

Ant ManPaul Rudd stars as Scott Lang in Marvel's Ant-Man

Cross, who wears shrinking suit the Yellowjacket, is the main challenger to Rudd's Scott Lang and Michael Douglas' Hank Pym. He also has access to the "Pym Particles" that can shrink matter and has crafted his very own, much more dangerous version, of the Ant-Man suit.

Marvel Releases 'Ant-Man' Teaser! [Trailer + Pictures]

Paul Rudd Michael Douglas

Marvel Studios has released the first full trailer for Ant-Man, giving fans their first real look at Paul Rudd as the shrinking man himself. The internet pretty much imploded when this one hit last night and where better to gauge the critical reaction than on the hallowed pages of Reddit?

Ant ManPaul Rudd as Scott Lang in Ant-Man

But first: a little background. Ant-Man is a weird one. It doesn't carry the same anticipation as The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America 3 or even Doctor Strange, though it's an intriguing movie with an intriguing cast. It was intended as a project for the innovative British filmmaker Edgar Wright though after disagreements over the script, he moved on. Still the major cast - Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas - remained and Peyton Reed came in as director.

You Can Stop Squinting Now, There's A Full-Sized "Ant-Man" Teaser Now

Paul Rudd

Attention, we now have a full-sized trailer for Marvel’s Ant-Man. Well, it’s still 17-seconds long, so technically still a teaser, but at least you can sort of tell what’s happening in this one, unlike their April-Fools-come-early stunt from a few days ago. Ant-man shrinks, the trailer was tiny, there you go. Clever, clever Marvel.

Paul Rudd
Paul Rudd in a Marvel flick is just too right. Right?

After the studio dropped an “ant-sized” version of the teaser, many, including this staff writer, complained that nothing could actually be gleamed from the miniscule video. So what have we learned this time around?

So Here's Why Edgar Wright Pulled Out Of 'Ant-Man'

Edgar Wright Evangeline Lilly Paul Rudd

With Edgar Wright on-board, Ant-Man was easily one of the most anticipated movies in recent years. Paul Rudd in the lead role was an intriguing and creative casting decision and support from Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas hinted that Wright and his collaborators were cooking up something special.

However, it became immediately apparent that Wright and Marvel were not meshing and the British filmmaker's vision for Hank Pym's story clearly wasn't in-line with the studio's ingredients for a money-maker.

They Came Together Review

Good

How do you spoof a genre that's already a joke? Filmmakers David Wain and Michael Showalter clearly think the answer is to go for broke with a nonstop barrage of silliness, because some of the jokes are bound to stick. They did the same thing for teen summer-camp comedies more than a decade ago with Wet Hot American Summer, which stars many of the same actors. And while this movie is just as hilarious, it never quite transcends its own jokiness. Because as a rom-com it's never very engaging.

The story plays out as Joel and Molly (Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler) meet up with their friends (Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper) and regale them with the story of their romance. Everything about their courtship is just like in the movies, from the meet-cute to the fact that New York is another character in their story. Molly runs an adorable candy shop, while Joel is a "not too handsome or too Jewish" corporate raider sent to shut her down, but they hit it off, engage in a wildly energetic first sexual encounter, then go through the usual montage sequences on their way to the usual rough patches ("Your dreams don't pay the rent!"), breakups and mad-dash reunions.

Since it's told in flashbacks, the film feels almost like a collection of comedy sketches, most of which are ridiculously funny. The jokes are clever and pointed, with riotous side characters including sassy best friends, inappropriate relatives, idiotic coworkers and clingy ex-lovers. So every scene is a zany mixture of goofy slapstick, surreal visual gags and hysterically overstated emotion. Thankfully, the cast is more than adept at wringing every moment for laughter. Rudd and Poehler have impeccable timing, and they're supported by a terrific cast of seasoned comical actors, including amusing cameos from the likes of Adam Scott, Michael Shannon and Norah Jones.

'Ant-Man' Stands Under The Golden Gate Bridge In First Look Picture

Paul Rudd John Slattery

Marvel’s Ant-Man has had its fair share of setbacks, but production is fully underway now and we have a first look photo to whet our appetites.

Ant ManPaul Rudd as Ant-Man

The photo sees Paul Rudd as the titular ant hero (not anti-hero) standing under the Golden Gate Bridge next to a beaten up old Ford. We’re guessing he’s got some reason to go incognito, as he’s looking fairly conspicuous – hood up and holding a mystery bag. He’s also been in the wars as evidenced by those butterfly stiches on his brow.

The latest batch of actors to be included in 2015’s Ant-Man consists of Evangeline Lilly as Hope Pym, the daughter of Hank Pym and Corey Stoll (The Bourne Legacy, Non-Stop) as a colleague of Pym’s, who later dons the mask of the villain Yellowjacket, Deadline reports. Michael Douglas was previously cast as Hank Pym and of course there’s Paul Rudd in the title role, rounding out the cast so far.
