File this one under bizarre: Sir Patrick Stewart has revealed that he used to believe that he was circumcised for the vast majority of his life – until his wife told him he actually wasn’t!

The 76 year old screen and stage legend appeared on ‘The Graham Norton Show’, in an episode due to air on Friday (February 24th), to talk about his new movie Logan, in which he stars as X-Men head Professor Charles Xavier for the final time.

However, the conversation somehow got to the point where he told the host he believed he had been circumcised as a young child – only to have that belief shattered in an encounter with his wife Sunny Ozell, to whom he has been married since 2013.

"One night with my wife, as you do, we were talking about stuff and I mentioned my circumcision and she said: ‘You’re not circumcised’,” he told Norton. “I said, ‘What do you mean? That’s ridiculous, I should know. All my life my mother has told me it was fashionable at the time.’”

“I happened to be seeing my doctor the next day for a check-up so while he was down there I said, ‘By the way, my wife and I have had a little disagreement, I am circumcised, aren’t I?’"

"He took a closer look and said: ‘No! I am Jewish, and definitely know the difference!’”

Bemused laughter rippled through the audience, before Stewart suddenly realised where he was and to whom he was talking. “Oh no, my grandchildren will be watching this!” he exclaimed.

Stewart was joined by his BFF Sir Ian McKellen on the sofa, alongside his Logan co-star Hugh Jackman and singer-songwriter James Blunt. Back to his actual job, he told Norton about what it was like to finally conclude his famous X-Men role.

“Last week, we were at a screening in Berlin sitting next to each other and when it got to the very emotional ending and I noticed Hugh wipe away a tear, then I did the same and during the credits he held my hand and I was done, I was weeping and sobbing.”
