A third Bridget Jones movie, entitled Bridget Jones' Baby, is in the work with Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth reprising their roles as Jones and Mark Darcy. Patrick Dempsey, the American actor best known for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy, is also expected to feature in the film.

As Deadline reports, Dempsey is in final talks with producers, Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, to star in the film. Dempsey may act as yet another of Bridget’s love interests. Hugh Grant, who played the womanizing Daniel Cleaver in the first two films, will not be reprising his role so there’s certainly a vacancy to add complication to Jones’ love life.

The first two Bridget Jones novels by Helen FieldingBridget Jones’ Diary and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason – were released in 1996 and 1998. Following the making of two successful films, based on the first two books, the Bridget Jones franchise has a cult following. Fielding released her third novel in the franchise in 2013 but left fans devastated when she (spoiler alert) killed off Bridget’s husband – and father of her child – Mark Darcy.

The plot is being kept under wraps. However, the upcoming film will reportedly not be based on the final book (so a fourth film is a possibility) but has been inspired by columns Fielding wrote between 2005 and 2006 which continued Jones’ story. Fielding is working on the script along with One Day writer David Nicholls.

Production is set to begin in the U.K. in October 2015.
