Don’t count ‘Community’ out just yet. The former cult television show had been facing cancellation for years, and NBC finally gave it the axe in early May after ratings once again failed to live up to expectations. However, the show might just get another chance: the streaming website Hulu is in talks with Sony Pictures Television to bring ‘Community’ back for a sixth season.

Hulu may be bringing Dan Harmon's 'Community' Back

“We've been on the receiving end of some phone calls, but we really need to get together with the Community team and have real conversations and figure out the future. If there's any show that should have a future or could have a future, it really feels like Community is the one,” Sony Pictures Television co-president Jamie Erlicht told The Hollywood Reporter.

‘Community’ was struggling to survive since the very beginning, but the demand from fans and critics alike kept the show kicking for five years. When Dan Harmon rejoined the series as showrunner after being fired after season three, it felt like things were finally getting back on track after a disappointing season four. Upon the cancellation, Harmon wrote in a lengthy blog post that his feelings were initially “eh” regarding the matter, but that he “wouldn’t stand in the way” of the show coming back. “I know fandom, when it gets this deep for this long, becomes almost religious, including the urge to stone the less than faithful. But there are lots of reasons a Community resurrection could be difficult. So be prepared for that,” Harmon wrote on his blog.

Even though the talks are in progress, is a revival for the series really necessary in the first place? Out of all of the canceled shows, what makes ‘Community’ one of the ones worth bringing back on another platform? With the show’s passionate fanbase and its #SixSeasonsAndAMovie motto, it makes you wonder if ‘Community’ should have jumped ship to a digital viewership years ago. Its humor and writing just doesn’t fit an NBC timeslot, and frankly, the show is better off not on a major network in the first place. Its presence is absolutely needed, however, and Hulu is the best place for it to flourish.

Whether the ‘Community’ to Hulu deal goes through or not, it seems to have been the most likely destination from the start. Since the second of its cancellation, people were instantly calling for Netflix to save the series from its doom. Late last year, the digital streaming service brought back AMC’s cult hit, ‘The Killing,’ for a final six episode season, so it wasn’t out of the question for ‘Community’ to follow that same path. However, in an existing deal with Sony, all of the episodes of ‘Community’ are already streaming on Hulu, so it’d be the perfect spot for a new season to reside. With Hulu Plus’ six million subscribers, it could be enough to spread new episodes like wildfire and bring the series the success that its rightfully deserved from the start. "You can't get to six seasons and a movie without six seasons," Erlicht continued. If talks continue for a sixth season, talks for a movie might be happening sooner than you think.
