The pilot episode for the series, which she will star in and executive-produce, will be filmed this winter.
The ABC network has unveiled a new scripted comedy series based on the life of pop sensation Nicki Minaj, in which the singer herself will star and claim an executive production role.
The news was broken by Deadline on Tuesday (September 29th), the pilot episode will be made this winter in New York City, with a full series likely to be given the green light. The biographical series will be based on Minaj’s childhood in Queens, following her family’s immigration from Trinidad & Tobago when she was five years old.

The pilot episode has been scripted by Kate Angelo, who worked on ‘Will & Grace’, and she’ll be working closely with Minaj in writing the rest of the series. Aaron Kaplan, Stella Bulochnikov, Gee Roberson, and Brian Sher are also on board as executive producers.
“This is one of the more unique adventures I’ve ever embarked on,” said the Grammy nominee in a statement reacting to the news. “I couldn’t be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special.”
32 year old Minaj had teased the project herself on social media the night before, with the hashtag ‘#NickiSurprise’ trending on Twitter throughout Tuesday. She’s had a degree of TV and movie experience before, scoring a voice role in Ice Age 3: Continental Drift and starring in 2014’s The Other Woman, as well as an appearance on ‘Saturday Night Live’.
A representative of the ABC network, EVP of programming and development Karey Burke, added: “Nicki Minaj is a force to be reckoned with at everything she touches. We’re beyond thrilled to bring her one-of-a-kind story to our channel. Nicki is an international superstar, yet not everyone knows how inspiring and hilarious her true story is, and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”
