The former One Direction band member - who recently released his debut solo single 'This Town' with Capitol Records - is believed to be working with Don, who would be the ''ideal'' person to assist Horan with this career.
And it is believed Horan approached Don after a conversation with the 'Wild Horses' hitmaker.
Speaking to The Daily Star newspaper, a source close to the star said: ''Niall got in contact with Don through Ronnie Wood who has been friendly with 1D a while.
''Niall loves his classic rock and Don is ideal to help Niall develop.''
Don first joined forces with The Rolling Stones in 1994, which saw him work with the group on 'Voodoo Lounge', which was swiftly followed by 'Stripped' one year later, as well as 2004 'Live Licks' and 'A Bigger Bang'.
Don's celebrity clientele also include Sir Elton John, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, John Mayer and Van Morrison.
Meanwhile, the 'History' hitmaker has announced he plans to release his first album next year, and he cannot wait to go on tour, even if it is without his four other band mates.
Speaking previously, he said: ''Just laying here watching and TV and thinking . Really looking forward to going to cities and maybe seeing them this time . Hahaha .
''Instead of being stuck in the hotel room and playing PlayStation (sic).''
