Um, what? Daniele Watts, whose face and/or name you may recognize from roles in Django Unchained, as well as TV shows like Weeds and Partners. She popped up in the news this week for a different reason. On Thursday, the actress was caught doing what she describes as “showing affection, fully clothed, in a public place” along with chef Brian James Lucas.

Watts used the opportunity to refocus media attention on police liberties and civil rights.

When police officers arrived to see the PDA, they asked for Watts and Lucas’ IDs, but only the latter obliged, according to his own account on his Facebook page. The altercation led to the actress being handcuffed and put into the police car, until the police could identify her.

She was released soon after, but the reason for the incident in the first place is still a huge, glaring mystery.

The Los Angeles Police Department is yet to make a statement on the matter, according to Entertainment Weekly, but Watts’ own post refocused the conversation on police liberties and civil rights in the US. Watts' entire post about the encounter is worth reading, but a choice extract reads: “As I was sitting in the back of the police car, I remembered the countless times my father came home frustrated or humiliated by the cops when he had done nothing wrong. I felt his shame, his anger, and my own feelings of frustration for existing in a world where I have allowed myself to believe that “authority figures” could control my BEING… my ability to BE!!!!!!!”

The LAPD is yet to comment on the encounter.
