The European premiere of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice went ahead in London last night despite the terrorist attacks in Brussels earlier in the day.

The screening at the Odeon in Leicester Square on Tuesday evening (March 22nd) happened as planned amid a heightened security presence, with the movie’s stars Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill attending the premiere along with the director, Zack Snyder. However, the red carpet reception part of the evening, including interviews and press lines, was scaled back.

“Our hearts go out to the victims of recent terrorist attacks, their families and the communities impacted around the world,” Warner Bros said in a statement earlier on in the day, denying rumours that the studio was going to cancel the event altogether.

“Rather than yield to terror, we’ve decided to join the film’s fans and move forward with the London premiere of Batman v Superman this evening.”

Camera operators and TV crews were asked not to film the event, as “a sign of respect” for the victims.

The Islamic State terrorist group claimed responsibility for the atrocities in the Belgian capital on Tuesday morning, which targeted the international airport and the city’s subway system in two co-ordinated attacks. 34 people are known to have been killed, with nearly 200 more injured.

Getting on with things in the spirit of remaining resilient, Affleck, who plays the caped crusader in the movie, was briefly interviewed and spoke about his role and the history behind it.

“It’s an amazing feeling - a tremendous honour. I thought about Christian Bale, Michael Keaton and George Clooney and just felt a tremendous sense of honour and gratitude.”
