After carving out a career as a beloved Broadway actor, ‘American Horror Stories’ star Gavin Creel has died aged 48 two months after being diagnosed with cancer.

The star – who was also a beloved Broadway star renowned for performances in shows including ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’, ‘Hair’ and ‘Hello, Dolly!’ – passed away on Monday (30.09.24) while undergoing treatment for a rare and aggressive form of sarcoma, his partner Alex Temple Ward said.
Gavin was known to TV fans for playing Troy Winslow on ‘American Horror Stories’, and was diagnosed with cancer only two months ago.
He found he had Sarcoma – which forms in connective tissue including bones and muscle – in July and had been getting treatment at New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering.
His family has requested gifts or donations in his memory be made to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids cause.
The actor landed a Tony Award nomination after his debut as a lead in the 2002 production of ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’.
He got another nomination for his performance in ‘Hair’ before he earned a Laurence Olivier Award for playing Elder Price in the West End version of ‘The Book of Mormon’.
Gavin acted in two episodes of popular US show ‘American Horror Stories’ in its first season.
His other notable stage credits include parts in a 2004 production of ‘La Cage aux Folles’, as well as roles in ‘She Loves Me’, ‘Waitress’ and ‘Into the Woods’.
Ohio-born Gavin was born to parents James and Nancy Creel on 18 April, 1976.
After he graduated from high school, the aspiring actor attended the Department of Musical Theater at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater, and Dance, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1998.
