The Decemberists Bring 'Nihilistic' New Album 'I'll Be Your Girl' To Playlists This Spring

The Decemberists

The Decemberists are set to return with a brand new album this year entitled 'I'll Be Your Girl' and it's worlds apart from their previous work. They also have a new video out, plus they are set to embark on a North America-wide tour to support the record this Spring.

'Severed' is the latest single from the Portland quintet, and their first since 2015's 'Why Would I Now?'. The first taster from the new album, it is accompanied by an animated video directed by Morgan Gruer which is laden with political themes (such as Presidet Donald Trump with devil horns).

Five Examples Of Pop Stars Becoming Authors

Morrissey Nick Cave Courtney Love Bruce Dickinson The Decemberists Leonard Cohen

Eagle-eyed indie fans will have seen the hilarious news that Morrissey has been nominated for the ‘Bad Sex Award’ by The Literary Review this week. His first fictional work ‘List of the Lost’, arriving two years after 2013’s notorious ‘Autobiography’, received wildly mixed reviews from most critics.

The nominated passage of ‘erotic’ prose contains the memorable phrase ‘bulbous salutation’. He may be lauded as the lead singer of The Smiths and as a solo artist, but it’s unlikely that his fiction will be remembered in quite the same way, if this is anything to go by.

However, success on the stage doesn’t necessarily preclude a rock star from enjoying successful pursuits as writers. Here are some other, more accomplished examples of rock stars writing prose instead of lyrics.

Rockers Fall Out Boy have scored their third US Number 1 album, the latest Billboard 200 chart reveals. The group’s sixth studio album American Beauty / American Psycho shifted 218,000 units across all formats during the week ending January 25th, according to figures given by Nielsen SoundScan.

The new record knocked Meghan Trainor’s debut Title, which sold 86,000, down to Number 3, and fended off non-mover Taylor Swift at Number 2 with 119,000 units. It marks the first time since 2010 that a January sales month, typically a quiet time for major releases, has seen two albums debut at the top with sales of over 150,000.

The Decemberists - What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World Album Review

Deliberately not playing up to their name or any obvious marketing tie-ins, The Decemberists chose to release their last single, and album precursor, 'Make You Better' in November last year and this, their new album, in January. But then Portland's finest proponents of articulate, intellectual and evermore interesting indie folk-pop have probably always been trying to avoid the obvious with good cause.

The Decemberists - What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World Album Review

On this, the band's seventh studio album, The Decemberists have lost none of their quirky individualistic and enigmatic charm. They may have ditched any notion of a particular concept for the album (other than not to have one) but they have lost none of their ability to superbly craft and deliver a poignant well told song.

Following on from the hugely successful album of 2011 'The King Is Dead', 'What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World' comes packed with some fabulously Decemberists styled stories brilliantly and beautifully played out as ever. As well as the peculiarities and idiosyncrasies that the band are loved and lauded for there are a few more besides, giving rise to a very startling album.

The Decemberists, We All Raise Our Voices to the Air (Live Songs 04.11-08.11) Album Review

The Decemberists' crowning achievement to date The King Is Dead featured on many end of year lists for 2011. Now the Portland band is underlining the importance of that record with a live 20 song double album culled from the final 5 shows of their subsequent tour. It treads a fine line between satisfying fans, while also serving as an introduction to The Decemberists' 6 album back catalogue.
