The Essex Green Cannibal Sea Album

A bit of a mixed bag this. From some extraordinarily catchy pop on Don't Know Why (You Stay) to bland country folk pop elsewhere, it isn't exactly consistent. A Sasha Bell project (as was Ladybug Transistor), Cannibal Sea is The Essex Green's third album.

Her sweet, pure voice (and the interplay with the bland Christopher Zeller) this gives the album the feel of Belle and Sebastian (but with less desire to be cute). Cannibal Sea sets out to stay well within the boundaries of country and pop, and any indie tendencies are turned down to 1 or 2.

Unfortunately, the indie-ness is the only thing making the songs here interesting - mostly, Cannibal Sea heads into soft rock just a little too wilfully. Pleasant enough, and easy enough to listen to, but it is easy to feel somewhat shortchanged by the end of the disc.

Rating 6/10
