11. Various Lyric Supergrand (Album; - Different Drummer/Substance)
Birmingham, our second city has long been a heavy player in the hip-hop scene, and respected club night Substance is amongst those that have been shouting loudest in the name of the tunes for almost six years now. In that time they have showcased some of the biggest names on the circuit such as The Pharcyde and Jeru The Damaja hence managing to keep all the baggy trousered Brummies more than happy.

Resident DJ, promoter and music maker Chris Read selects the tunes for Lyric Supergrand (studying the credits for all the tracks realises that its a pretty incestuous affair) and in doing so manages to pull together an impressive tracklisting. A varied selection of tunes ensue, mainly on the softer more accessible side of hip-hop.

But from Cipher Jewels 2000 Years with the leftfield jazz elements of the Silent Poets to the ultra smooth Common style groove of Haychs Can You Feel Me? to Creative Habits (Chris Reads alternative moniker) cut n paste Turntables Pt 1&2, this an album that puts Midlanders well on the hip-hop map.
