Blood Meridian Kick Up The Dust Album

Vancouver rockers Blood Meridian release their second album, after winning fans worldwide as part of the current wave of great Canadian music.

Kick Up The Dust is a sturdy collection of coal-black folk-rock, which at its worst is workmanlike, but at its best is spellbinding.

"Get Someplace Else" and "I Don't Believe" fall firmly into the former category, both are rather lumbering and outstay their welcome. Fortunately for us, though, there are many more tracks which fall into the latter, particularly the wonderfully grizzled "Work Hard For What?", which is a winner if only for the line, "Take your job and shove it up your ass."

Elsewhere, "In The Forest, Under The Moon" captivates with the deathly romanticism contained within the hushed duelling vocals of Matthew Camirand and Shira Blustein.
There is plenty to love in the bleak landscapes conjured up by this record, and it is yet another testament that Canada has one of the most exciting music scenes in the world right now.
