Anechoic This Is How It Is Album

In case you were wondering, anechoic means, "neither having nor producing echoes", so that's the educational part out of the way. Having formed a few years ago, they've become regular touring partners of Embrace, which will give you an idea of the type of music they produce.

This mini-album (an EP perhaps?) opens with 'Flickering', a slow-burner that can be likened to Athlete, with electronic touches decorating the gentle indie drone. The title track surprises with its heavy dance beats, perhaps influenced by more recent Radiohead and just about as perplexing. The band are actually best when keeping things simple, as proved on the soothing 'Coin Drop', a track that holds its own in an indie scene which is saturated.

Anechoic also prove the knack for a stomping chorus on 'Time And A Half', but the rest of the bluesy track fails to please. The band continue to mix and match styles on 'Say When' and 'Tired Today' - and credit to them for having some imagination - but neither work well and fail to keep your attention. Very much a hit-and-miss affair, this trio are unlikely to make a mainstream breakthrough yet, but could be worth keeping tabs on.
