Mindy Kaling Talks About Her Involvement In 'Ocean's Eight'

Mindy Kaling Stephen Colbert

Mindy Kaling has admitted that she’s “scared” by her upcoming role in Ocean’s Eight, the all-female reboot movie of the Ocean’s Eleven franchise, because of the list of extremely high-profile names she’s starring alongside.

‘The Mindy Project’ star and creator was speaking to Stephen Colbert on ‘The Late Show’ on Tuesday night (October 4th).

She said that, although the project starts shooting in just two weeks’ time, she has no idea about the kind of character she’ll be playing – and joked that her comparatively low profile compared to the A-list stars on the movie like Rihanna, Sandra Bullock, Helena Bonham Carter, Awkwafina, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway means her character will probably get picked off early on!

The Night Before Review

Good

This blending of the stoner bromance with the Christmas comedy works surprisingly well, layering gross-out humour with holiday sentimentality. So it's a bit of a shame that the script is thin and ultimately rather pointless. There are observations about the nature of friendship and maturity, but nothing very deep. But along the way, the cast and crew pack in a riotous sense of humour that mainly centres on drugs and genitalia, plus a whiff of Christmas magic.

The movie centres on three best buddies in New York: Ethan, Isaac and Chris (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie). Over the past several years, they've celebrated Christmas together with a series of traditions including karaoke, Chinese food and loudly festive sweaters. But now Isaac's wife Betsy (Jillian Bell) is about to give birth to their first child, and Chris' pro-football career is beginning to take off. So this will be their last Christmas Eve together, and they plan to make it an epic one. Ethan has secured tickets to New York's most exclusive secret holiday party, which he learns that his not-quite-ex girlfriend Diana (Lizzy Caplan) is attending. Meanwhile, Betsy has given Isaac a box of drugs for a last blow-out, and Chris scores a stash of weed from a mythical dealer (Michael Shannon).

The premise is certainly packed with possibility, and the filmmakers have a ball with the druggy excesses as the night unfolds, including wildly anarchic set-pieces that throw these likeable characters into all kinds of messy situations. The three lead actors make the most of their roles, adding layers of complexity that aren't in the script while indulging in rampant silliness at every turn. And the supporting cast are up for it as well, fully committing to the movie's crazed atmosphere. There are also hilarious extended cameos from James Franco and Miley Cyrus.

Relax, Mindy Kaling! A Look At The Four Shows Fox Has Renewed

James Purefoy Mindy Kaling

Fox network has announced that four of it’s current shows will be renewed for another season. The Following, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Mindy Project and New Girl are Fox's Chosen Four, so let’s take a closer look at the lucky shows that won’t end almost as quickly as they started.

The only drama on a list of otherwise comedies, The Following isn’t your regular crime scene investigation show. James Purefoy stars as a college professor turned serial murderer who has escaped from jail and has a score to settle. Eight years after he was imprisoned for murdering a string of teeange girls who attended his college, the FBI agent who had initially hunted him is back on the case. Oh, and did we mention the affair the agent had with the killer’s wife? This show gets sordid, but it’s one of those that always promises to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Kaling Vs. Critics - Actress Defends Her "Elle" Cover In Letterman Interview

Mindy Kaling David Letterman

When Mindy Kaling’s very first Elle cover hit the web, the backlash was swift and surprising. Plenty of blogs, news websites and, of course, social network pundits put in their two cents about what seemed to be Elle’s different treatment of Kaling. While her fellow starlets – who are slimmer and white, as everyone pointed out – were pictured in full-body, colorful shots, Kaling got a black and white portrait, cropped to show just her face.

Mindy Kaling Feels As Though 'Elle' Cover Critics Are "Insulting" Her

When Elle presented their four-cover edition of their latest edition, their 'Women in TV' issue, it featured four of the most prominent female TV stars working today. Among the four was The Mindy Project star Mindy Kaling, whose cover caused an unwarranted amount of controversy and conversation over how the majority of her body was cropped out of the cover image, unlike the other, mostly full-body other three.

White, skinny actresses Allison Williams, Amy Poehler and Zooey Deschanel all feature from the knee up and in full colour on their respective cover photos for the February issue of the magazine, whereas Kaling's image is in black and white and her picture is much more close up than the rest, with her chest, face and one arm only seen in the picture. For some, this looked way too suspicious to be a coincidence and the online crusaders stood up for Kaling in their droves. Trouble is, Kaling didn't really want standing up for and the arguments her so-called supporters were crusading for were actually a little hurtful.

Taylor Swift Leads The Way In The List Of Charitable Stars

Taylor Swift One Direction Beyonce Knowles Mindy Kaling Bryan Cranston Aaron Paul Justin Bieber

On the back of arguably her most successful year as a recording artist, 2013 has also seen Taylor Swift give, give and give as she was crowned the most charitable star of 2013. In the 'Top 20 Celebs Gone Good' list compiled by DoSomething.org, Swift was crowned the most giving celebrity of the year by the non-profit charity group following a year of helping the under-privileged.

Livin' on a Prayer
Swift helped raise cash with Bon Jovi and Prince William with their rendition of 'Livin' on a Prayer'

In the past twelve months, Swift has donated $100,000 to the Nashville Symphony and raised money for the homeless in London with Bon Jovi and Prince William, but other than just giving away her money, Taylor has also given away plenty of her valuable time for charitable causes too. In addition to fronting group therapy sessions for her bullied fans, Swift has also pledged her time to a number of younger fans facing serious troubles. Among them, Taylor met with a 7-year-old fan named Grace Markel, who was struck down by a car on the way to a previous performance by Swift, before a show in September. She also spent some of her Christmas Day on the phone to a cancer-stricken fan who was spending the holidays in hospital.

When actor James Franco threw a party for his fellow movie stars including the star-studded cast of 'Knocked Up' and several stars of Seth Rogen's comedies including Seth himself, Jay Baruchel, Jason Segel, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Danny McBride, Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, no-one expected it to be anything more than your average drink fuelled Hollywood superparty. However, things take a turn for the worst when they experience a major earthquake; the ground opens up to the hottest depths of the Earth's core swallowing up Rihanna and Jason Segal as mysterious beasts start swarming around outside. What's a comedy cast to do with limited food and no real skills of the like they portray in the movies - especially when golden girl Emma Watson bursts in on them wielding an axe demanding all their resources. This is Hollywood versus the apocalypse, but who would really win?

Jennifer Lawrence Amongst Time Magazine's Time 100 Cover Stars

Jennifer Lawrence Jodie Foster Jay Z Mindy Kaling Ed Helms

The annual list of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people is being published this week, previewed today (April 18, 2013) on USA Today. This year, the magazine will be publishing seven different covers, each with a different person on the front. On the domestic issues, Jennifer Lawrence, Jay-Z, Elon Musk (CEO and founder, SpaceX; co-founder, Tesla Motors and PayPal), Sen. Rand Paul and teen activist Malala Yousafzai each landed a slot, whilst the international covers were split between Aamit Khan and Li Na.

Each of the people on the list is profiled by another celebrity or well-known figure. Jodie Foster wrote about Jennifer Lawrence, saying “You'll remember where you were when you first felt it, how you were stuck to one spot like a small animal considering its end. The Jennifer Lawrence Stare. It cuts a searing swath in your gut. A reckoning. I remember going to the cutting rooms of Winter's Bone. I thought, Sure, this girl can act. But, man, this girl can also just be." The comic actress Mindy Kaling was profiled by her Office co-star Ed Helms, who said “Mindy Kaling embodies the trifecta of being brilliant, wonderful and hilarious. Because that is statistically impossible, it can mean only one thing: she was created by an evil scientist to lull us into a giddy stupor in order to control our minds. … To be made fun of by Mindy is to feel special. I've learned so much from working alongside her, and I'm proud to call her a friend. I just wish she hadn't been created by an evil scientist.”

The US president Barack Obama was included on the list for the eighth time – that’s more than any other person currently on the list. 35 women were included on this year’s list.

Wreck-it Ralph Review

Very Good

Visually ambitious and packed with inside jokes for arcade gamers, this colourful animated adventure is an enjoyable romp but is probably too energetic for its own good. It simply never settles down so that we can sink into its various settings or get to know its lively characters. So in the end we've enjoyed the talent of the animators and the vocal cast, but we feel rather exhausted.

The story is set in a vintage 1980s arcade game called Fix-it Felix Jr, in which Felix (voiced by McBrayer) must repair damage inflicted by Ralph's (Reilly)massive fists. But after 30 years, Ralph is tired of being the unloved villain. He wants to be the good guy for a change, so heads across the room into another game, the combat role-play adventure Hero's Duty. There he's trained by tough-talking squadron leader Calhoun (Lynch) and battles space insects to win a medal and escape. But a killer bug follows him into the candy-themed road-race game Sugar Rush, threatening the balance of the whole arcade.

The majority of the plot takes place here, as Ralph teams up with unloved "glitch" Vanellope to challenge the smiling tyrant King Candy (Tudyk). Unlike the pixellated Fix-it Felix Jr and the virtual reality of Hero's Duty, Sugar Rush is a pink-hued, delicious-looking land of sugary treats. Each of these games, and the transfer station between them, is populated by spirited characters with their own subplots. And there are also appearances by iconic favourites such as Pac-Man, Mario and Q*bert. So with the different animation styles and eclectic ensemble of characters, our eyes aren't bored for a second.

Mindy Kaling’s The Mindy Project Debuting On Fox Tonight

Mindy Kaling

The comic actress, writer, producer and director, Mindy Kaling has a new show: The Mindy Project, and it kicks off tonight on Fox, reports The Boston Globe.

Kaling plays an obstretrician/gynaecologist who is addicted to romantic comedies. The setting for the show was St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston: “I grew up there,” she says of the hospital. “I was basically living there, and I actually know what it was like the way my mom saw it, so it was kind of an interesting experience.” The news that her show had been picked up came alongside the tragic news that her mother had died, adding a sentimental and pertinent caveat to the hospitalized setting. “Between the pilot and writing my book, it was all basically when she was diagnosed last year around this time,” she explained. “I did so much writing for both. And then I got to spend a lot of time with her and run little bits of dialogue by her, so she’s very much a part of the process of both my book and this new show.”

Kaling was nominated for an Emmy in 2010 for her writing on The Office, and her book, “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns),” became a New York Times bestseller. She also boasts well over a million twitter followers, which of course isn’t a writing award or a top-selling book, but nowadays…that’s a thing.

The Five-Year Engagement Review

Excellent
Segel and Stoller repeat their duties from 2008's Forgetting Sarah Marshall and come up with another hilarious romantic-comedy for grown-ups. It's corny, but it keeps us laughing all the way through while stirring in some genuinely sweet moments.

A year after they met, San Francisco chef Tom (Segel) proposes to his girlfriend Violet (Blunt), but their excited wedding plans are interrupted when Violet gets a post-doc position at the University of Michigan. So they postpone the wedding and head to the snowy Midwest. There, Violet's career soars while Tom has little to do beyond making sandwiches in a deli and going hunting with his new friends. And before they can set a new date, Violet's sister (Brie) marries and has two kids with Tom's best pal (Pratt).
