The Sense Of An Ending Review

Very Good

Julian Barnes' Booker Prize-winning novel is adapted into a remarkably intelligent, gently involving film anchored by a terrific performance from Jim Broadbent. With an unusually realistic depiction of London life, this an introspective story about finding closure, and it's nice that the filmmakers avoid ramping up the narrative to push a big emotional climax. Instead, it's in the small moments that the film rings true.

Broadbent plays Tony, a pensioner who runs a small camera shop as a hobby. His primary distraction is his single daughter Susie (Michelle Dockery), who is in the final stages of pregnancy. So Tony and his ex-wife Margaret (Harriet Walter) are providing whatever support they can. Then out of the blue he is notified of an inheritance from someone in his distant past. This sends him down memory lane, as he remembers his life as a university student (then Billy Howle), falling in love with Veronica (Freya Mavor) and feeling crushed when she fell for his best friend Adrian (Joe Alwyn) instead. So Tony tracks down Veronica (now Charlotte Rampling) in the present day to try to sort out their loose ends.

This is a complex story about how tricky it is to make sense of a messy past. The film refuses to simplify things in any way, leaving the audience to see themselves in the characters and situations as it flickers back and forth between the two timelines, dropping hints and details until the final piece falls into the puzzle. And the message is that you can't get closure until you accept even the more difficult elements of your story.

Taylor began to elegantly sway in time to the music whilst William adjusted his bow tie and cuffs in a James Bond style before the big chorus. Taylor and Wills leant into the microphone - the Prince tentative at first - before belting out the "Woooahh livin' on a prayer" line from the chorus.

The scene is question saw Joanne Froggatt's Anna Bates raped by Lord Gillingham's odious valet, Mr. Green. As rating rose, so did the widowed Lady Mary's spirits as the doom and gloom of episode one's grieving was lightened with some dancing. Although Mary (Michelle Dockery) did not join in with said dancing despite the invitation from Cousin Rose (Lily James), there was a palpable optimism in the air as the Lady moved out of her slump and back into the land of the living.

The Hollow Crown Trailer

The first episode of this series is 'Richard II' detailing the life of the King between 1398 and 1400; his greed, his severity in regards to his subjects and his eventual overthrow by his cousin Henry Bolingbroke, who, after claiming the throne, had Richard imprisoned and later murdered. The second two episodes are based on Bolingbroke, now dubbing himself Henry IV, who's Kingship has brought with it a revolt with the Percy family. His son, the future Henry V, is determined to be King one day, but with a disapproving father who'd rather Henry Percy (aka Hotspur) become his heir, there is understandable bloodshed. Downton Abbey Series 4 To Hit Autumn 2013, But Will Everyone Still Be There?

Dan Stevens Michelle Dockery

Christmas is best for weight gain, uncomfortable family gatherings, warmed alcoholic beverages and most importantly, period dramas. So, the news that a fourth series of Downton Abbey, including a feature length Christmas special, has been confirmed is pretty much the best Christmas gift we could ask for.

Filming for the 8 episode series is set to begin in February next year with it premièring in autumn 2013. Dan Stevens, who plays Matthew Crawley, was said to have declined to sign up for a fourth series back in October, but his character is really rather crucial to the whole affair. Having killed off Sybil and the Turkish diplomat back in series 1, another untimely death would render it rather unbelievable. New reports from the Daily Mail say that negotiatiions are still ongoing for the contracts of all the characters.

Both Stevens and Michelle Dockery, his on air wife, have made a great impact in America and are both planning on taking their careers there. Stevens has in fact already moved his entire family out to New York while he performs in The Heiress on Broadway. Dockery's and Steven's characters are absolutely central to Downton Abbey as they are the inheritors, so it really will be an enomrous challenge for Julian Fellows, the creator of Downton, to find his way around that hurdle. But apparently, he "hasn't started writing series four yet so there is time to work out how the story will go and who will be in it."

Downton Abbey Prequel On The Cards

Dan Stevens Michelle Dockery

The writer of ITV's period drama series Downton Abbey is planning a prequel that explains how the Earl and Countess of Grantham first met, reports The Telegraph.

"I do actually have an idea of doing a prequel of the courtship of Robert and Cora, when all those American heiresses were arriving in London - the Buccaneers, as they were called," explained Julian Fellowes. Downton has become a remarkable success in the U.K, constantly performing well in the viewing figures table, and being placed in The Guardian's top 10 TV programmes of 2010. Fellowes said the drama would be shown when the full show draws to a close. "I don't think you can continue a narrative in more than one area at once," he explained. "I never really liked those Coronation Street Christmas specials where they all go to Haiti, and you don't have to watch it. Somehow it doesn't feel very organic." Despite its success, some of its leading stars, including Dan Stevens and Michelle Dockery, are expected to leave at the end of this series in pursuit of Hollywood stardom. Downton Abbey season 3 returned to ITV1 on Sunday, 16 September and it will air in the United States beginning 6 January 2013. The next episode will be this Sunday (September 30th).

Asked whether he wished he'd stumbled across Downton earlier in his life, Fellowes gave a humorous response: "People say to me, 'Wouldn't you rather this had all happened when you were 30?' Well, the short answer to that is yes, but the long answer is that by the time you're 50 you've made a fool of yourself so many times that the thought you might make a fool of yourself is no longer a deterrent. So you just cheerfully take it on board and have a crack."

Anna Karenina Review

Excellent

Tolstoy's iconic novel may have been filmed several times, but you've never seen a version like this. Clever writer Tom Stoppard and visually whizzy director Joe Wright combine talents with this ambitious film, which sets all of the action in a theatre that expands and shifts into a variety of settings.
Yes, it's rather strange, but it's also drop-dead gorgeous.

Knightley reteams with Pride & Prejudice and Atonement director Wright to deliver another solid performance as Anna, an aristocrat in 1870s St Petersburg who is married to the achingly nice establishment gent Alexei (Law) but falls under the spell of the bland but sexy young heartbreaker Vronsky (Taylor-Johnson). And when she gets pregnant, she has to make a very difficult decision. The central theme is that these people are characters in a play dictated to them by their restrictive Russian society, so they have little choice but head toward tragedy.

Fortunately, there's a parallel plot about a wealthy farmer (Gleeson) who rejects so-called civilised society to stay in touch with the earth. He pursues the smart, young Kitty (Vikander), also entranced with Vronsky but beginning to become disgusted with so-called civilised culture. The film includes a rather huge number of characters, including Anna's womanising brother (Macfadyen) and his longsuffering wife (a particularly excellent Macdonald). And Wright and Stoppard effortlessly let everyone swirl around each other in a huge pool of emotion.

Although this pool often feels frozen over, as the feelings are pretty icy. So it's good to have open-hearted performances by Macdonald and Gleeson to hold our interest. Knightley is excellent, although we never understand why Anna does anything she does (which is the whole point). But perhaps the most impressive thing about this film is its astoundingly beautiful design: the sets, costumes, photography and music are sumptuous and lush, never fussy but always adding to the intensity of each scene. Look for it to deservedly hoover up Oscar nominations across the board.

Anna Karenina is the young wife of senior statesman Alexei Karenin. Theirs was more of a marriage of convenience rather than love and soon Anna's eyes begin to wander elsewhere as her desire for romance becomes ever more intense. She meets Count Vronsky, a handsome cavalry officer with whom she enters into a passionate adulterous affair. When people find out about their involvement, Anna's honour is crushed in the eyes of the Russian noble men and women and she is forced to make a choice; to leave her loveless marriage and family and lose all honour and dignity, or end her affair with her possessive lover and be potentially forgiven.
