Michael Caine Changes His Name By Deed Poll - And Blames ISIS

Michael Caine

Legendary British actor Sir Michael Caine has been forced to change his legal name by deed poll – to Michael Caine.

The 83 year old actor’s birth name is Maurice Micklewhite, but he used the name ‘Michael Caine’ to land his first acting jobs back in the 1950s because he and his agent felt it would look better on movie posters.

However, as reported by The Sun, he revealed that he recently altered his legal name on his passport to match his famous alias, because heightened security restrictions at airports had been making international travel much more difficult.

Now You See Me 2 Review

Good

While the original 2013 magical caper was a big hit, it's style-over-substance approach didn't exactly scream out for a follow-up. But here we are, with go-to sequel man Jon M. Chu at the helm (he also directed the second Step Up and G.I. Joe movies). Most of the high-octane cast is back for more trickery, but the plot is even murkier this time.

Since their last whiz-bang stunt, the Four Horsemen have been laying low. Their leader Dylan (Mark Ruffalo) continues to work in the FBI, helping Daniel, Merrit and Jack (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco) plot their next caper, now joined by quirky illusionist Lula (Lizzy Caplan). Their latest project is to expose corruption at a New York conglomerate, but the stunt is ambushed, and the quartet mysteriously finds themselves in Macau, coerced by a tech genius (Daniel Radcliffe) into staging an elaborate heist. Meanwhile, Dylan's cover is blown, so he teams up with veteran Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman) and heads to Macau himself, chased by his FBI boss (Sanaa Latham). And it all goes down in London.

The round-the-world plot gives the movie some very cool locations, and the plot races so quickly that most audiences won't notice that it makes virtually no logical sense at all. There are flashy distractions at every turn, from sleight of hand to vanishing acts to gross-out gags to enormous double-bluffs, and all of this is thoroughly entertaining even if the script itself feels strangely incomplete. Most sequences tend to end before they get to the point, while action scenes are choppy and incoherent. The only set-piece that works is the kinetic central heist, which hinges on a rapidly flung playing card. But even though it's uneven and clunky, the film remains entertaining simply because of the magical shenanigans and snarky dialogue.

Michael Caine Joins Oscars' Diversity Debate: "You Can't Vote For An Actor Because He's Black"

Michael Caine Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

Michael Caine has given his thoughts on the diversity row which is currently dominating this year’s Oscars coverage. Speaking to Nick Robinson on BBC Radio 4, the veteran actor said: “You can't vote for an actor because he's black,” when asked his opinion on the controversy which has seen a number of stars criticise the Academy for its lack of diversity.

Michael CaineMichael Caine has joined The Oscars’ diversity debate.

"There's loads of black actors. You can't vote for an actor because he's black,” Caine told Robinson. “You can't just say, 'I'm going to vote for him. He's not very good, but he's black. I'll vote for him.' You have to give a good performance.”

Michael Caine: 'Not Getting The Girl Anymore Led Me To Two Academy Awards'

Michael Caine

Veteran actor Michael Caine has spoken about how he only started receiving recognition for his roles once he was unable to play the leading man. The 83-year-old is a guest on tonight’s edition of ‘The Jonathan Ross Show’ (January 16th), where he makes his first British chat show appearance in over 10 years.

Michael CaineMichael Caine only started earning awards when he stopped playing the leading man.

“At 83, you don’t get many offers of leading parts in movies, you usually play grandpas," Caine said. “I was about 60, 61 somewhere like that and I got a script and I read it and I sent it back to the producer saying the part is too small and he sent it back to me with a note saying, ‘I didn’t want you to play the lover, I wanted you to play the father’ and I thought uh oh, it’s over.”

Now You See Me 2 - Teaser Trailer

After becoming the most famous magicians in the world with their last tricks and exposing the wrongdoings of Arthur Tressler, it was obvious that as many people as they helped, they'd always upset a powerful few. One of those is Arthur's son, Walter Tressler.

Walter is on a mission to cause The Four Horsemen as much damage as possible. In order to stop Walter, the four magicians must pull off a stunt far bigger than their first.

With Isla Fisher pregant and unable to commit to the film Lizzy Caplan (Masters Of Sex) has been brought in to play the role of Lula. Other than Isla, all the lead cast from the first film will appear in the new film and Daniel Radcliffe will play the role of Arthurs son, a tech magnate.

Youth Was Like A Gift For Michael Caine

Michael Caine

"It was like having a script from another world," Caine laughs. "I was amazed that he'd heard of me! I'm well known in England and America, but in Italy? But my agent said he wrote it for me. So I asked Paolo, 'Did you really write this for me?' The director replied, 'I wrote it for two of you, but the other one was busy.' That put me in my place."

Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel

Set at a Swiss health resort, the film is an exploration of how it feels to grow older, and Caine didn't hesitate when scenes required him to appear wearing only a towel. "It's the only body I've got," he says matter-of-factly. "At least it was a reality. Young people should know: this is what's going to happen, do don't get too smart about it." Was he tempted to hit the gym before those scenes? "At my age getting in shape is a waste of time," he says. "What you see is what you get. No one expects me to look like Brad Pitt!"

Interstellar Is A New Genre For Nolan

Christopher Nolan Anne Hathaway Matthew Mcconaughey Michael Caine Jessica Chastain Robin Williams Al Pacino

Over the past 15 years, Christopher Nolan has proven himself as a master of intelligent filmmaking, generally sticking to the psychological thriller genre while mixing in action and brain-bending flourishes. And now with Interstellar he has left the confines of Earth's gravity to head into science-fiction for the first time.

Matthew McConaughey & Anne Hathaway on setMatthew Mcconaughey & Anne Hathaway on set

Intriguingly, Nolan has still maintained his commitment to in-camera effects even in this genre, refusing to indulge in flashy digital trickery just because he can. Like his last few films, he has also shot portions of the film in Imax, massive screen imagery photographed on film, not digitally, which gives the entire movie an earthy texture that's intriguingly realistic. This also focusses even the most existential and scientific discussions squarely on the characters.

Taylor Swift Remains Quiet On 'The Secret Service' Role. Singer Yet To Confirm Role In Film

Taylor Swift David Beckham Adele Elton John Michael Caine Samuel L Jackson Colin Firth

Rumour has it that Taylor Swift will be making the leap on to the big screen in the upcoming British spy caper The Secret Service, with the country-tinged pop starlet apparently due to fill in one of the cameo appearances that are being dished out to famous faces such as David Beckham, Elton John and Adele. Although certain rumours suggest that the part is as good as hers, others claim that this is all bogus and Taylor hasn't even been approached by film bosses. So what gives?

Taylor Swift is tipped to play a cameo role in the spy film

A report from the UK's Daily Mirror states that Swift has landed the cameo role already, in which she will play a butt-kicking escapee of villainous Samuel L Jackson's character. The cameo appearance supposedly features her squaring up to the baddie after fleeing his lair and is one of many cameos lined up for the film, which has been described as being like a modern day version of James Bond (so Skyfall then). David Beckham is also being strongly linked with the role, as have Elton John and Adele, however it is Taylor who has given the first rebuttal and supposedly denied the rumours linking her with the role.

Come On Becks, It's Time To Serve Your Country Again

David Beckham Colin Firth Michael Caine Matthew Vaughn

David Beckham joining The Secret Service? Sounds about right, even if it’s only the film and not the U.S federal law enforcement agency. In fact, they both sound totally feasible to us. The English ex-footballer will be making his third film appearance alongside Colin Firth and Sir Michael Caine in the Matthew Vaughn-directed film, The Secret Service, if The Sun are to be believed.

A source said: "Becks was asked by Colin Firth if he'd like to be in the movie but he is yet to fully commit. He loves movies and fancies appearing on the big screen - but just as a one-off, not a full-time career." But Becks isn’t the only British star said to be in demand for this film; glamerous singer Elton John is said to be wanted for a fight scene. We would really like that to happen, please. And if it does, it’s due to start shooting this autumn.

Since Sir David quit football, he’s been fulfilling an ambassadorial role for the Chinese Football Association, as well as travelling the globe for sports initiatives and charitable causes. He retired from the game while playing for the recently minted Paris Saint Germain, whose supporters recognised his commitment to the sport by performing a standing ovation at his last game.

'Now You See Me' Receives Mixed Reviews From Critics On US Release

Jesse Eisenberg Mark Ruffalo Woody Harrelson Isla Fisher Dave Franco Melanie Laurent Morgan Freeman Michael Caine Louis Leterrier

Magical mystery thriller Now You See Me receives a flood of favourable and not so favourable reviews as it is released in US movie theatres today (May 31st 2013).

With a star-studded ensemble cast led by Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Mélanie Laurent, Morgan Freemanand Michael Caine, it's no wonder 'Now You See Me' has turned out to be a massive hit with many critics. Living up to its expectations, this Louis Leterrier directed movie has been described as 'A grandiose, far-fetched, somewhat tongue-in-cheek caper thriller' by Vulture and Television Without Pity said 'the tricks were really fantastic' and 'overall, it was an enjoyable time'.

On the other hand, many were unimpressed, with Complex stating rather bluntly, 'the illusion of its awesomeness vanishes to reveal its greatest trick yet: stealing your money' and CTV's Canada AM suggesting that one should 'wrap it in cellophane, lock it in a box and hide it under the bed'. Either way, if you like glamour, mystery and mischief then it's a great film to go and see and with such an excellent cast, just how bad can it possibly be?

Just Resting Me Eyes! Morgan Freeman Drifts Off In Live Interview

Morgan Freeman Michael Caine

Morgan Freeman struggled to stay awake during a live television interview with Michael Caine on a Fox breakfast show while they were quizzed about their new movie 'Now You See Me'.

The poor Oscar-winning movie veteran, who's currently approaching his 76th birthday, fought to stay conscious as he rested his eyes while his co-star talked about the new magic flick. He is seen blinking a few times as his head begins to nod before snapping his eyes open again and attempting to focus. However, after a clip from the movie is played while Caine talks about the illusions, Freeman's chin is resting on his chest in what looks like a deepening slumber. Determined as he is, though, he manages to shake himself awake before the snoring began.

Neither Caine nor the FOX affiliate Q13 presenters seemed to notice at the time though, or, if they did, decided to ignore the slightly awkward situation anyway. Freeman later told People.com, 'I wasn't actually sleeping. I'm a beta tester for Google Eyelids. I was merely updating my Facebook page', while Fox noted on its website, 'Maybe he was up too late partying.' Still, at least it wasn't a solo interview; that might not have been as easy to brush off.

Yes Please! Quentin Tarantino Wants To Work With Johnny Depp

Quentin Tarantino Johnny Depp Tim Burton Meryl Streep Michael Caine

Quentin Tarantino has revealed that Johnny Depp’s on his wish list of actors that he’d love to work with.

He’d have to prise him away from Tim Burton’s clutches, of course, but we reckon a Tarantino and Depp collaboration would be pretty awesome. The pair have apparently chatted about it in the past, so perhaps it’s not just a movie-lover’s pipe dream, after all? “We would love to work together,” Tarantino told talk show host Charlie Rose.

“We've talked about it for years. Not that we get together and talk about it for years, but from time to time. We're obviously fans of each other. It just needs to be the right character. I just need to write the right character that I think Johnny would be the right guy to do it with. And if he agrees, then we'll do it. And then it'll be magical. I haven't written the perfect character for Johnny Depp as of yet. Maybe someday I will, maybe someday I won't. We'll see.”

The Dark Knight Rises DVD Hits Stores: But Can The Movie Win An Oscar?

Michael Caine Christopher Nolan Christian Bale Gary Oldman Tom Hardy Anne Hathaway Morgan Freeman

The wait is over. The Dark Knight Rises is finally available on DVD, and it's already flying off the shelves. The Ultraviolet Digital Copy is currently No.1 on Amazon.com's bestseller list, while The Dark Knight Trilogy (Batman Begins/The Dark Knight/The Dark Knight Rises) sits at No.2.

Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie grossed over $1.08 billion worldwide, while receiving a slew of positive reviews. It's currently the seventh highest grossing film of all time and the second highest grossing film of 2012. The film boasted an all-star cast including Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman and British star Michael Caine, who recently spoke to the Huffington Post about his Oscars chances. The actor - who plays Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred - already has two Best Supporting Actor gongs, though could he get a nomination in 2013? "You don't think about getting nominated. They either do it or you don't. There's nothing you could do. I'm looking for people I could pay off, but I can't find any. [Laughs] So you just wait," he joked. It's unlikely the movie itself will compete for Best Picture, though the likes of Caine could land a nomination. He added, "You just leave it in the lap of the members. I'm one of the members, so I'm voting for me. I'll tell you that."

Caine recently completed shooting the forthcoming thriller Now You See Me, about FBI agents who track down a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances. The film hits cinemas in the U.S. on June 7, 2012.

Vidal Sassoon Remembered By Michael Caine, Nicky Clarke And John Frieda

Vidal Sassoon Michael Caine Nicky Clarke

Vidal Sassoon, the legendary hairstylist who died in May aged 84, was remembered in a memorial service at St Paul's Cathedral on Friday (October 12, 2012). Sassoon's friends and family, including Michael Caine, Nicky Clarke, John Frieda and artist Anish Kapoor gathered at the event to celebrate his extraordinary life.

Born in London in 1928, Sassoon's mother Betty was forced to put him and his brother in an orphanage, visiting them once a month. However, it was Betty who introduced a young Vidal to Adolph Cohen, the owner of a local hair salon, where he impressed as a shampoo boy. The rest, as they say, is history and Sassoon became the world's most famous and influential hairdresser. After fighting for the Israeli army in 1948, he returned to London and recreated the classic bob, which encapsulated the spirit of the Swinging Sixties. He also created Mia Farrow's classic pixie-cut for the movie Rosemary's Baby - a style since favoured by the likes of Emma Watson, Natalie Portman and Annie Lennox. Sassoon's son Elan gave a touching but funny speech at the memorial ceremony, insisting, "Dad wouldn't want me to be too serious."

A new photography exhibition titled 'Vidal Sassoon: How One Man Changed The World With A Pair Of Scissors' by Michael Gordon runs at Somerset House until October 28, 2012.

On being asked why Brits are often cast as butlers in Hollywood movies referring to his reprising role as Alfred Pennyworth in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, Caine replies simply: 'We invented them'. He also adds that any good actor can play the part and it's not based on nationality.

Caine will asume the same role yet again in the final instalment of the trilogy 'The Dark Knight Rises' to be released very soon in UK cinemas. Acting alongside him is a star-studded cast of Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman and Anne Hathaway

Austin Powers In Goldmember Review

Weak

The cameo-driven, "Mission: Impossible 2"-spoofing, movie-within-a-movie, pre-title sequence of "Austin Powers in Goldmember" is the funniest five minutes to date in this spy comedy franchise. Then Mike Myers shows up and ruins everything.

Still trapped in a skit-comedy frame of mind all these years after leaving "Saturday Night Live," his short attention span has made the "Austin Powers" movies little more than a string of brief, loosely-related set pieces which are often 98 percent setup and 2 percent punch line.

Myers goes miles out of his way to make a reference to the 1983 song "Mr. Roboto" by the band Styx, for example. Then he spends nebulously unfunny gaps between such gags to make fleeting mentions of the plot, which in this case concerns Dr. Evil -- Myers cueball goofball homage to James Bond's maniacal bald nemesis Blofeld -- teaming up with an scabby Dutch roller-disco owner named Goldmember whom Evil has transported from the 1970s.

Get Carter Review

OK

If the rain-slicked new Sylvester Stallone revenge fantasy flick "Get Carter" seems a little familiar, it's with good reason.

It could be that the picture is a remake of a gnarly 1971 film of the same name (starring Michael Caine, who appears in this one too).

It could be that the bad-guy-going-after-worse-guys plot -- about a Las Vegas mob enforcer determined to find and snuff the people who whacked his estranged brother -- isn't all that different from the story of a hard-as-nails parolee avenging his daughter in last year's "The Limey."
