Alice Through The Looking Glass Review

Excellent

This much more light-hearted sequel reinvigorates the franchise after Disney's quirky but murky 2010 reboot of Lewis Carroll's classic, which sent the heroine into Underland (not Wonderland) for a dark adventure that spiralled into a Lord of the Rings-scale battle. Thankfully this time the odyssey remains personal, centred on lively characters rather than overwrought plotting. And Alice's time-travelling quest is both pointed and engaging.

After captaining her late father's ship on a global journey, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns to 1875 London to bad news: her mother (Lindsay Duncan) has made decisions that take her future out of her hands. As she struggles to respond, she is summoned back to Underland to help her friend Hatter (Johnny Depp), who is emotionally devastated by the fact that his entire family has been killed. So Alice decides to help by confronting Time (Sacha Baron Cohen) and stealing a device that will allow her to travel back to help the younger Hatter. But she also becomes entangled in the early life of the White and Red Queens (Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway), and the feud that grew between them as young sisters. Meanwhile, Time is terrified that Alice is unravelling the fabric of reality.

The emotional nature of Alice's mission adds a surprising layer of suspense to the entire film, while director James Bobin (The Muppets) adds a breezy comical tone to Tim Burton's stunningly visual designs. Some of the more wacky flourishes don't quite work (such as the "sea of time" imagery or Time's hand-powered vehicle), but the film more than makes up for these with wonderful character details. This lets the actors relax into their roles while cranking up the surreal touches. Wasikowska is great as the plucky heroine fighting for her right to control her own life, a strong point that's made without preaching.

Julianne Moore is one of the greatest actresses never to have won an Oscar, even though she's been nominated four times and has a mantle full of SAG statuettes, Emmys, Golden Globes and critics' group awards.

But that could change this year with her Cannes-winning performance in David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars, a viciously astute attack on the myth of the Hollywood dream. Even the critics who hated the film were mesmerised by Moore's performance as a middle-aged actress desperately clinging to her fame.

'Only Lovers Left Alive': Why This Achingly Cool Vampire Romance Is So Not 'Twilight' [Trailer]

Tilda Swinton Jim Jarmusch Mia Wasikowska

Only Lovers Left Alive is released in cinemas today, bringing Jim Jarmusch's supernatural romance to theatres. The movie's main draw is of course its two British leads: Tilda Swinton and Thor's Tom HIddlestone play the alluring onscreen vampire couple Adam and Eve, who are trying to find their way in the modern world.

Only Lovers Left Alive Swinton Hiddlestone
Tilda Swinton & Tom Hiddlestone Cut A Deathly Cool Couple In 'Only Lovers Left Alive.'

Described as a "crypto-vampire love story" by the director, Only Lovers Left Alive brings to life a fantastical yet gritty imagining of a modern day vampire tale. You'd have thought that by now, our desire for vampire romance movies would be well and truly sated, particularly after the five Twilight movies.

Only Lovers Left Alive Review

Excellent

It's hardly surprising that laconic filmmaker Jim Jarmusch (Broken Flowers) has created such an inventively offbeat vampire movie, helped hugely by the ace casting of Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as extremely long-term lovers. Fans of the genre might find the movie a bit slow and relaxed, but sharp humour and especially strong characters make it unmissable.

In a run-down house in Detroit, centuries-old Adam (Hiddleston) is living in squalor while anonymously creating club music with the assistance of Ian (Yelchin), who finds things like antique guitars for him to play. He gets his supply of clean O-negative blood from a helpful doctor (Wright). Meanwhile in Tangiers, Adam's wife Eve (Swinton) relies on her old pal Marlowe (Hurt) for the blood she sips at sunrise like a cocktail before lapsing into a deep sleep. Bored, Eve decides to visit Adam, so books nighttime flights and arrives to a blissful reunion. But their solace is interrupted when her wild-child sister Eva (Wasikowska) turns up.

These may be creatures of the night, but over thousands of years they have discovered exactly what kind of art soothes their souls. And Eva's boisterous presence disrupts their languorous peace even more than the fact that the blood supply is becoming increasingly contaminated. Adam and Eve call humans "zombies" dismissively and joke about their influence on key events and inventions throughout history. Hiddleston and Swinton are utterly perfect for these roles, bringing out details that are hilarious as well as emotionally moving. They also let us see the years of boredom mixed with a glimmer of childish curiosity that would be required to survive for so long.

The Double Trailer

Simon is one of those sorts of people who can never seem to make an impression on anybody. His work colleagues barely know his name, his love interest Hannah remains stoically uninterested and his mother is unsupportive and, quite frankly, thinks he's rather strange. Already in danger of letting his life slowly slip from his grasp, things start to get dark when a new employee joins Simon at work. James is the spitting image of Simon in every way from the hair and clothes to the voice and smile; however, the very obvious difference is that James is brimming with confidence with a magnetic charisma that charms everyone he meets. Simon appears to be the only person who notices his resemblance - a frustrating prospect when Hannah starts to become extremely interested in James. Simon simply can't let this imposter infiltrate his world - but just how far will he go to stop him?

The Double - 2 Snakes Clip

A new employee named James has taken up a position at his workplace but, to Simon's horror, he looks and sounds identical to him - only with a more extroverted disposition and captivating character. Simon's too afraid to try and change things in his life, feeling comfortable (if a little depressed) with remaining in the shadows, but when James starts to take over everything he holds most dear, he is forced to try. But can he battle his demons while remaining sane at the same time?

'Only Lovers Left Alive': Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddlestone Celebrate Undying Love In New Vampire Romance [Trailer]

Tilda Swinton Jim Jarmusch John Hurt Mia Wasikowska

You'd think we'd have had our fill of vampire romances by now, but new movie Only Lovers Left Alive is set to show us that there's still fresh blood to shake from the undead fantasy genre. It helps that Jim Jarmusch's soon-to-be-released film boasts the hair-raisingly talented lead duo of Tilda Swinton and Thor's Tom Hiddlestone, who play a pair of trendy vampire lovers trying to find their fill of blood whilst keeping a low profile.

Only Lovers Left Alive
Tilda Swinton & Tom Hiddlestone Strike A Deathly Pose In The New Vampire Romance.

Swinton and Hiddlestone are moulded into the deathly cool couple Adam and Eve. After being around for centuries, Adam, a rock star with a penchant for vintage guitars, is finding it difficult to get his head around the modern world with all of its technology. His need for reclusiveness is threatened by the people drawn to his air of mystery and the music he makes.

Only Lovers Left Alive Trailer

An ancient vampire named Adam is desperate to remain hidden from the world in his Detroit home. But that's harder than it looks as people are becoming increasingly interested in the music he makes and his mysterious ways. However, it seems music is not his only passion when his old lover Eve makes her way over to his home to rekindle their long lost feelings for each other. Enamoured at the sight of each other, it isn't long before all their attentions are focused on each other, but things aren't as easy as they should be when Eve's perpetually irritating little sister Ava shows up to see them and proceeds to test Adam and Eve's relationship to the limits as Adam struggles to contain his frustration at having her around. The pair have more to worry about, however, such as how they are going to survive in a quickly decaying world.

'Only Lovers Left Alive' is a hearty vampire flick written and directed by Jim Jarmusch ('Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai', 'Broken Flowers', 'Dead Man'). What makes it different to vamp films of recent times, however, is that the characters' monstrous natures take a bit of a back seat as romance and drama become the movie's main themes. It is due for release in the UK on February 21st 2014.

Mocked at by the Alice Springs locals, she starts to train camels on a farm and learn about survival in the wildnerness. By the time she is ready to embark on her journey, she is well equipped with the knowledge and tools of basic survival in a scorching desert. Before her trip, she meets a National Geographic photographer named Rick Smoland who promises to fund her trip as long as he can visit her on her journey to take photographs. Robyn's loneliness starts to overwhelm her and she has a brief romance with the photographer, but the real revelations are what she learns about herself along the way.

'Tracks' is based on the true memoirs of the same name written by the real Robyn Davidson who spent 9 months crossing the barren Australian sands. The movie has been directed by John Curran ('The Painted Veil', 'We Don't Live Here Anymore', 'Stone') and written by Marion Nelson, and it was nominated for awards at the Venice Film Festival and the London Film Festival last year. It is set for UK release on April 25th 2014.

Unable to find the courage to turn his life around, things are about to get much, much worse as a new employee at his company named James shows up. James is Simon's ultimate doppelganger, and his appearance only serves to make Simon increasingly more nervous as, although they are identical in looks, they are total opposites in personalities with James possessing a much more confident and magnetic character. Gradually, James starts to infiltrate Simon's life, taking over everything he holds most dear with Simon being driven completely insane in the process.

Robert Pattinson Shares Awkward Kiss With Mia Wasikowska On 'Maps To The Stars' Set

Robert Pattinson Mia Wasikowska John Cusack Julianne Moore Carrie Fisher

Robert Pattinson was spotted canoodling with Mia Wasikowska on camera recently - but don't worry, it was just for a particularly steamy scene in his new movie Maps To The Stars.

The 'Twilight' star is in the front of the limousine for once as he takes on the role of driver and aspiring actor Jerome in the new drama. As well as starring alongside Mia, who plays feisty pyromaniac Agatha Weiss, Pattinson will also appear alongside John Cusack, Julianne Moore and Carrie Fisher.

Getting the hang of cruising in a limo is one thing, but what Robert finds most difficult to get his head round is the romantic scenes, which he has previously admitted is 'awkward'.

Stoker Review

Excellent

You could argue that this film is all lurid style over substance, but there's actually a lot going on behind the stunningly gorgeous imagery. Korean director Park (Oldboy) beings his lavish visual approach to this Hitchcockian story about a family infiltrated by a predator. Packed with references to iconic movies and books, the film is heightened and deranged, and its intense moodiness gets under the skin.

It centres on 18-year-old India Stoker (Wasikowska), distraught after the death of her beloved father (Mulroney). Without him to soften her, she's also even angrier than usual at her needy mother Evie (Kidman). Then the charming, handsome Uncle Charlie (Goode) turns up at the funeral and moves in to help them grieve. Actually he seems to be trying to seduce Evie, who is flattered by his attention. But the housekeeper (Somerville) and an auntie (Weaver) don't stick around long enough to see what's really going on, and it becomes clear that Charlie actually has his sights set on India.

Both the script and the direction continually echo familiar literary and cinematic icons, from the family's name to the Shakespearean family plot to the prowling interloper (see Robert Mitchum in the 1950s classic The Night of the Hunter). Director Park's camera prowls through the house like a ghost, catching tiny details in every lushly designed scene while finding all kinds of shadings in the performances. Wasikowska is terrific as the sensitive, rather cruel young woman at the centre of the storm, while Kidman steals her scenes with a haunted, conflicted performance. Between them, Goode is almost painfully seductive. And clearly dangerous.

Updates From Sundance Film Festival And The London Critics' Circle Awards Plus Trailers For, Stoker, Emperor And Red 2

As the Sundance Film Festival continues in Utah, buzz is emerging about the new Nicole Kidman movie Stoker, in which she plays the widowed mother of teen Mia Wasikowska as they deal with the arrival of the unexpectedly sexy Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode). From the director of Old Boy, a new trailer depicts the film as a stylish, warped and very black comedy. It comes to cinemas on March 1st.

Here in Britain, two leading awards contenders open this week. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln stars Daniel Day-Lewis, the front-runner in the Best Actor race. This would be his unprecedented third win in the category. And Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty stars Jessica Chastain, who is currently the favourite for Best Actress, although Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook is giving her some serious competition.

But no one should write off iconic French actress Emmanuelle Riva's astonishing turn in Amour. She won the London Critics' Circle Film Award for Best Actress on Sunday. The London critics also gave Amour their Film of the Year title, and it's up for Best Picture at the Oscars as well.

Nicole Kidman Stars In 'Stoker', Sundance Reviews Are In (TRAILER)

Nicole Kidman Mia Wasikowska Matthew Goode Wentworth Miller

The star-studded horror movie Stoker has been in the pipeline for over two years. With an almost unrecognisable Mia Wasikowska in the ever so creepy lead, along with Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode and Jacki Weaver as support, Stoker has already begun to make waves, enjoying a successful premier at the Sundance Film Festival.

Prison Break's Wentworth Miller wrote the script way back in 2010, along with a potential prequel, which he sent out under a pseudonym, reportedly due to him wanting to hear a fair verdict rather than one based on his fame. The outcome was it being listed as one of 2010's 10 best screenplays gone un-produced. All that has been put to rights, with a great cast and an exemplary director, Oldboy's Park Chan-wook.

India Stoker is a reclusive young artist with no friends at school due to her many peculiarities and idiosyncrasies. Her only friend is her father, and when he dies in a unexplained car accident she finds herself even more isolated as she is forced to stay with her unhinged mother Evie who shows her nothing but contempt. It isn't long before the mother and daughter are joined by India's uncle Charlie; a man whom India has never been told about before despite him being the brother of her beloved father. He is handsome, charming and mysterious and Evie wastes no time in falling in love with him - seeing him as a blessing since the death of her husband. Her contempt for her daughter increases, however, when she finds that Charlie has become much more interested in India and, although she initially suspects him of having dubious intentions, the interest is soon reciprocated when she becomes infatuated with his sinister games.

'Stoker' is a psychological thriller with a star studded cast directed by Chan-wook Park ('Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance', 'Oldboy') and written by first-time screenwriter Wentworth with additions from Erin Cressida Wilson ('Secretary', 'Chloe'). It is set for release in the UK on March 1st 2013.

Lawless Review

Extraordinary
Director Hillcoat and musician-turned-screenwriter Cave previously worked together back home in Australia on the dark Western The Proposition, and now they have reunited in America for this true story set during Prohibition in the early 1930s. Unsurprisingly, it plays out like a Western. And it also features two of The Proposition's memorable actors, Pearce and Taylor.

The story centres on the three Bondurant brothers in rural Virginia. Eldest sibling Forrest (Hardy) runs the family moonshine business with middle brother Howard (Clarke). But the younger Jack (LaBeouf) wants in on the action and secretly teams up with whiz-kid Cricket (DeHaan) to speed up production and sell their wares to a big-city gangster (Oldman). Then slimy city-slicker Federal Agent Rakes (Pearce) arrives, determined to stop bootlegging no matter who he has to torture and kill. Meanwhile, a sexy barmaid (Chastain) with a shady past arrives to distract Forrest, while Jack daringly woos the rebellious daughter (Wasikowska) of the local preacher.

The Bondurant Brothers, Forrest, Howard and Jack, take up lawless methods of achieving the American Dream during the Depression in Franklin County, Virginia. Soon their illegal money-making schemes, including selling their home brewed moonshine in their saloon, attract the attention of the local law enforcement who recruit a corrupt inner-city cop, Charlie Rakes, to break the brothers and force them to give him shares in their profits. In an attempt to gain his brothers' respect and win the heart of the pure and well brought up Bertha who seeks danger and excitement, the suggestible and smart Jack partners with the brutal and, quite frankly, untrustworthy city gangster Floyd Banner - things start to become strained for the Bondurants when the 'indestructible' Forrest is seriously injured and loyalty among the brothers is questioned.

Albert Nobbs Review

Good
Based on a true story, this introspective film seems to suggest that these events aren't perhaps as extraordinary as they appear. But the strong premise is weakened by writing and direction that never get a grip on the story.

In 1898, Albert (Close) works at an upscale Dublin hotel, and no one suspects that he's actually a woman. Quietly going about his work while saving to open a tobacco shop, Albert is unassuming and relentlessly polite. Then he's asked to share his room with visiting painter Hubert (McTeer), who learns his secret and reveals one of his own: he's a woman too. But Hubert has managed to have a normal married life. This inspires Albert to pursue the hotel maid Helen (Wasikowska), which is complicated by her lusty relationship with handyman Joe (Johnson).

Restless Review

Excellent
Van Sant returns to his earthy-airy style for this story of a young man coming to terms with the concept of mortality. It's effortlessly honest, with edgy humour balancing the dark themes. Although it's also diluted by commercial sensibilities.

After his parents are killed in a car crash, the thoughtful young Enoch (Hopper) becomes obsessed with death, attending random funerals and chatting to Hiroshi (Kase), the ghost of a young kamikaze pilot. The at one memorial service, Enoch is rumbled by Annabel (Wasikowska), who pursues a friendship with him. As they become closer, Enoch learns that the sparky Annabel has a fatal illness, which means he can no longer put off dealing with the fact that death is actually part of life.

Jane Eyre Review

Essential
This umpteenth film adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's enduring classic perfectly captures the experience of reading the book. The story and characters envelop us so beautifully that we get lost in the experience.

After being orphaned as a child, Jane (Clarkson) is sent by her selfish aunt (Hawkins) to a grisly boarding school where she's falsely scorned as a liar.

When she leaves at age 18 (now Wasikowska), she works as a governess for the ward (Moore) of the mercurial Rochester (Fassbender), finding friendship with the housekeeper (Dench) and, surprisingly, romance with Rochester. Alas, this doesn't go well, and when she flees she finds solace with rural parson Rivers (Bell) and his sisters (Grainger and Merchant). Surely she deserves some good news.

Director Cary Fukunaga adapts Charlotte Bronte's classic novel Jane Eyre. The plot stays true to the book and shows Jane at different stages of her life. It tries to show the darker and more gothic undertones that Bronte would've been surrounded by whilst she was writing the novel.
