After its stage premiere in 1987, the hit Broadway musical Into The Woods will finally receive the Hollywood treatment after it has been announced that the James Lapine-written show will be turned into a movie. Also titled Into The Woods, the fantasy film will employ an all-star cast, including Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean), Anna Kendrick (50/50) and James Cordon (Gavin & Stacey).

The plot centres upon a witch (Streep) who is on a quest to dispel a curse placed upon her and in so doing regain her beauty. As the witch ventures into the woods, famous fairytales are namechecked and woven together in a musical myriad of mystic tales. The heartfelt and often funny musical will reference Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Jack and the Beanstalk and will serve as a modern take on the classic Brothers Grimm stories of old.

Casting highlights will include Depp playing the Red Riding Hood-stalking wolf, Emily Blunt as a baker's wife longing for a child, James Corden as her baker husband, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella and Chris Pine as her prince.

In addition to its glittering cast, the brand new Disney live action film features an award-winning production team behind the scenes who will help make the movie as spectacular and visually rich as possible. Rob Marshall (Chicago, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) is helming the movie with producer Marc Platt (Wicked) making sure the magical movie hits all the high notes.

The film's songs will need to be out of the park performances with a stirring soundtrack therefore the talented Stephen Sondheim has been signed up as composer. The stage musical's songs will be welcomed and taken to a new dimension in the movie, including 'Children Will Listen,' 'Agony,' 'No One Is Alone,' and 'On the Steps of the Palace,' according to a press release.

The movie has begun shooting on location in England and is currently slated for a Christmas Day release next year in the USA, with UK release details to follow soon.
