Melissa McCarthy’s The Boss has taken the top spot at the US box office over the weekend, knocking off Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice. The comedy stars McCarthy as a former tycoon adjusting to life after prison and was directed by her husband Ben Falcone.

The Boss took an estimated $23.5 million during its opening weekend, according to Forbes. It managed to narrowly beat Batman v Superman’s $23.4 million total, with one of the closest margins between any top two films in recent years.

The Boss also managed to out perform McCarthy and Falcone’s 2014 offering Tammy. The film’s box office success comes despite negative reviews from critics and a Rotten Tomatoes rating of just 17%.

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice may have fallen off the number one spot, but the film did manage to bring it’s US box office total so far to $300 million. The film has also surpassed 2013's Man of Steel, also starring Cavill, which took $291million and it now ranks as the third highest-grossing DC Comics release to date in the US.

In the number three spot Disney's Zootopia falls one place from last weekend, with a total of $14.4million. At number four came a new entry, comedy sequel My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, which made $6.4 million. The top five was then rounded off by thriller Hardcore Henry, which opened with $5.1 million.
