As fans of Gilmore Girls went into excitement meltdown after it was revealed that a revival of the popular show would be returning on Netflix, many were soon stopped in their tracks when they realised Sookie - played by Melissa McCarthy - wasn’t included in the line-up.

However, fans can now finally relax after the Dragonfly Inn’s chef and Lorelai’s best friend revealed that she will be returning to Stars Hollow.

McCarthy went on the Ellen DeGeneres show to make the announcement herself.

Speaking about the Gilmore Girls on the talk show, the star of Bridesmaids said: "There has been something I’ve been asked about so, so many times and it hasn’t worked out.

"They’re making four new movies of the Gilmore Girls, which is a show that was near and dear to my heart for four years, and we could not get those schedules to work."

McCarthy added: "There was a whole thing and then I was going to be out of the country and literally about an hour and a half ago, we figured out that I’m going to go back and do it and I’m so excited!

"They’re going to be so amazing."

This comes after Gilmore Girls writer and creator Amy Sherman-Palladino described the difficulty the show had had with McCarthy’s schedule.

She said: "I’ve been told by her people for months, ‘Can’t happen. Can’t happen. Can’t happen.’

"There’s nothing juicy or hidden here. It’s a matter of she’s one of the top working actresses in films today and we are very proud of her."
