The Bourne Identity star is a regular in the action genre, but has yet to take on a superhero role, unlike his longtime pal Affleck, who is also Hollywood's newest Batman.

When asked if he would ever consider following in his friend's footsteps, Damon told the New York Daily News, "I think he (Affleck) approached it the right way, which is, 'Can I make a great superhero movie?' rather than, 'Do I want to play a superhero?' I'd consider it if the right thing came along."

In fact, the one superhero he wanted to play ultimately went to Affleck after Damon failed to share Daredevil director Mark Steven Johnson's enthusiasm for the comic book adaptation.

Damon says, "For us it was always Daredevil - that's the comic we read when we were kids. But when that one came along (in 2003) I chickened out, because I couldn't tell. I hadn't seen the director's work and I didn't know. So I just said, 'No'. Ben was like, 'I gotta do it'. And the movie ended up doing very well, even though I don't think Ben was ultimately very proud of it."

Even though the movie earned over $179 million (£111.9 million) at the global box office, it was panned by critics and fans alike.

But Damon hasn't ruled out playing his favourite superhero in the future, especially if The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan ever decides to take a shot at Daredevil..

Damon adds, "If Chris Nolan came up to me and said, 'I want to do Daredevil', I would be in."

The Oscar winner appeared in Nolan's 2014 film Interstellar.
